Colleges are now also teaching philanthropy, according to an August 31 article in the Carlisle Sentinel. Ashley Beadore, annual giving coordinator, talks about the various creative ways Messiah is encouraging students to give back during and after their college career.

Messiah student injured in Uganda blasts

July 15th, 2010

Kris Sledge, a sophomore at Messiah, was in Uganda with his home church when a bomb detonated at the restaurant where he and his fellow travelers were gathered to watch the World Cup final soccer game. Sledge was injured and among the first to be interviewed by the international media.

Two-student team earns second at regional bass fishing competition

June 7th, 2010

Students Daniel Poli and Louis Wenger represented Messiah College at the National Guard FLW College Fishing Northern Division on the Potomac River on June 5 and netted four bass for a second place finish and a chance to compete at the national level in August. Poli’s and Wenger’s victory earned the team $5,000; at the national tournament, the team will be provided with jerseys and wrapped Ranger boats towed by Chevy trucks.

Bates wins third national title

June 4th, 2010

Kristen Bates did it again! She out-performed the best hurdlers in Division III and won the national championship! With the victory in the 100-meter hurdles, Bates became Messiah’s most decorated athlete. The Harrisburg Patriot-News featured the track star June 4.

Grad beats the odds and graduates from Messiah

May 17th, 2010

Domineak Commodore grew up in inner city Harrisburg and watched friends make bad decisions, get in trouble, and turn to the streets. He wanted something else for his life, and, with the support of his grandmother, Commodore graduated from Messiah College on May 15.  A criminal justice major, he has already accepted a position with the Dauphin County Probation Office where he hopes to help young people make wise decisions and pursue education. The Harrisburg Patriot-News ran Commodore’s story in their May 16 edition.

Rhoads excels for softball team, honors her father

Jess Rhoads got a lot of people’s attention last year when she helped Messiah’s softball team win its first national championship. Rhoads, a graduate of local Northern High School, has a story and family background that compels her to be an outstanding pitcher and player. The Patriot-News did a lengthy story about Rhoads on May 16.

Millennials have world at their fingertips

The Milliennial generation has technology at their disposal like no other preceding generation, and they are optimistic about the future, despite challenging ecnomic times, according to an April 25 Harrisburg Patriot-News article that included interviews with Messiah alumnus Jonathan Bert and student Michael Jordan.

Student essay questions media representation of beauty

Samantha Moore, a senior sociology and anthropology major at Messiah, recently submitted a fascinating article about the media’s portrayal of beauty for Gender Across Borders, a global feminist blog. Moore’s article, posted April 16, talks specifically about Trya Banks and Jessica Simpson.

Student recounts her experience during Chile earthquake

March 10th, 2010

Sophomore Shaina Gleisner told her hometown newspaper, the Hanover Evening Sun, about her experiences during the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Chile in the early morning hours of Feb. 27. Gleisner is in her second semester of study abroad in Chile. She was one of the few students who was able to maintain communication with Messiah in the hours following the quake.

Knitting ministry joins young and old

January 4th, 2010

Once a month a group of about 25 Messiah College students spend a Friday evening knitting with residents of nearby Messiah Village, a retirement and assisted living community. This college ministry, called Tabitha’s, was started in 2005 and participation has increased steadily since. On Jan. 1, the Patriot-News wrote an article about his unique ministry.
