Amani Bead Project unites local students and aids Kenyan orphanage

December 1st, 2009

Messiah students and William Penn students get together every Wednesday night to design jewelry made from kazuris, clay beads made in Kenya. They then sell their creations and donate the proceeds to New Life Home Trust, a Kenyan shelter for orphaned babies. On Nov. 29 the Harrisburg Patriot-News ran a story about the project that includes quotes from professor Jean Corey and two Messiah students.

Messiah intern helps local historical society

December 1st, 2009

Messiah student Leah Gibbons, a history major, is interning at the Cumberland County Historical Society this fall where she is helping to develop a self-guided, audio walking tour of landmarks in the borough of Carlisle. Gibbons has selected the landmarks and developed the script for the tour. The Carlisle Sentinel covered the project in a Nov. 25 article.

Messiah lends vocal ensembles to masterful “Creation” performance

Messiah’s Concert Choir and the Susquehanna Chorale were among three vocal ensembles performing Haydn’s “Creation” with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra the weekend of November 20-21. The concert received an excellent review in the November 22 Harrisburg Patriot-News. The concert was sponsored by the College in honor of its Centennial.

Students make noticeable difference in Harrisburg

On September 17, the Harrisburg Patriot-News featured the Serving and Living Together (SALT) program that allows students to live in downtown Harrisburg at the Harrisburg Institute while still taking their courses in Harrisburg. Student Karisa Martin said about her urban experience, “It’s one thing to sit in a classroom and learn about struggles and injustices. But here you can go out into the community and see them first hand or hear about them first hand. This program is Messiah’s footprint in the city. Hopefully we can bridge that gap.”

College’s first graduate course well received

The College’s first graduate level course is off to a good start, according to participating students and the program director, both interviewed in an August 11 Carlisle Sentinel article. More than 20 students enrolled in the first course –Professional Issues and Ethics.

Archaeological dig on Cyprus provides unforgettable experience for students

July 31st, 2009

This summer, Professor David Pettegrew took nine Messiah students with him to Larnaca, Cyprus for a three-week research trip that involved excavating and documenting ancient settlements from the late Roman period. The July 31 editon of the Harrisburg Patriot-News featured a story including interviews with Pettegrew and student Rachel Skotnicki.

Student designs mural for downtown facade

July 17th, 2009

Messiah student Amy Chow is spending the summer before her senior year completing an internship with the Pennsylvania Downtown Center. Chow, with another summer intern, designed a mural for the side of a building in downtown Butler, Pa. that features transportation vehicles associated with the city. Residents will have the opportunity to paint portions of the mural.

College and Sisters of Annunciation help individuals with physical disabilities in Mali

June 2nd, 2009

The Catholic Witness, a newspaper of the Diocese of Harrisburg, features the efforts of Ray Norman, dean of the School of Mathematics, Engineering, and Business, and several students as they design, build, and implement water pump structures and latrine systems to assist disabled people in Mali, western Africa. The College’s chief contacts in Mali are four Sisters of the Annunciation who train village women in a variety of skills.

First-year softball pitcher reflects on season, dad

Jess Rhoads was already a recognizable name in the region as a former pitching star at Northern High School. Now, a first-year student at Messiah, Rhoads continues to impress local sports enthusiasts as she has helped lead the Messiah College softball team to their best season in a decade. Rhoads, who lost her father to cancer earlier this year, reflects on the season and the memory of her dad in a May 8 Harrisburg Patriot-News article.

Students assist with emergency drill at local hospital

April 13th, 2009

Messiah College nursing students role-played as injured patients in a mock emergency drill at York Hospital on April 9. The students, feigning everything from broken bones to lacerations to life-threatening injuries, were instrumental in helping hospital staff and local emergency responders anticipate the challenges of evacuating a large medical facility.
