Women’s basketball wins conference

March 1st, 2010

After two losses to conference rival Lebanon Valley College during the regular season, the rematch between the Falcons and Flying Dutchmen to claim the MAC Commonwealth Conference championship was much anticipated. Messiah handily defeated LVC 60-55. Senior guard Julie Henninger told the Patriot-News in a Feb. 28 article, “Coach laid it all out for us today when he told us to forget the past and focus on having fun and play loose.”

Father and daughter share love of basketball

Mike Miller is best known in Messiah circles for being the coach of the women’s basketball team. But, in the region, he’s equally as well known for being Taylor Miller’s dad. Mike’s daughter, Taylor, is the record-breaking scorer for the Mechanicsburg girls’ basketball team with more than 1,100 career points. On February 12, the Patriot-News profiled the father-daughter relationship.

Soccer recognition is top news story in association publication

The CCCU “Advance,” a publication of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, features Messiah College’ receipt of a congressional citation for its men’s and women’s soccer teams as the top news story in the monthly eAdvance.

Athletic program succeeds despite national economic challenges

Messiah’s athletic department is not immune from the economic challenges gripping many colleges and athletic programs across the country. However, according to student interviews conducted for a Dec. 26 Patriot-News story, changes made by Messiah have been subtle and certainly haven’t affected the Falcons’ ability to win: the men’s and women’s soccer teams just brought home national championships for the second year in a row.

Weekend’s athletic successes captured

With the men’s and women’s soccer teams advancing to the Final Four this weekend, and the field hockey team capping its perfect season as national runner-ups, it’s been a great weekend for Messiah athletics. Several local newspapers (and television stations) have captured the outstanding efforts of these teams.

Alum continues climb through Reds organization

Louisville Bats hitting coach Smokey Garrett admits that he doesn’t know where Messiah College is located, but he does know that alum Chris Heisey is proving he’s more than qualified to be playing Triple AAA ball with the Bats. In an article posted on the Cincinnati Reds website, Sweet says of Heisey, “I see him as a guy who’s just finding out how good of a player he can be.”

NCAA look at best programs in the country features Messiah

NCAA.com is taking a few weeks this summer to look back on 10 outstanding athletic programs, including Messiah’s impressive season that included national championshis in men’s and women’s soccer and softball. “Magic soccer runs” and a “scintillating softball title” is how NCAA is qualifying the Falcons championships.

Baseball star closer to the big leagues

June 30th, 2009

Star baseball player Chris Heisey is one step closer to the big leagues after being moved up from the Carolina Mudcats to the AAA Lousiville Bats this past weekend. Heisey, Messiah’s first baseball All-American, is one of the key prospects in the Cincinnnati Reds organization. The Sports Blog at the Patriot-News posted an article about Heisey on June 29.
