Messiah alum Kevin Wagner ’95 (also an adjunct professor in the Department of History) was recently named the Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year for Pa. by The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Wagner, who’s been teaching for 18 years at Carlisle High School, was also the 2014 recipient of the Thomas W. Holtzman Jr. Educational Leadership Award and the Patricia Behring PA Teacher of the Year by the National History Day organization.

The Oakes Museum of Natural History received a $98,500 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which museum director Ken Mark explains will purchase new storage units to facilitate proper conservation of the museum’s artifacts. Meeting the necessary requirements for preserving and improving its collections is the next step in the museum’s accreditation process; the current outdated storage units cannot keep the stored artifacts well-maintained and secure, which has hindered the goal of accreditation. Messiah College is the fifth “best regional college in the north,” according to the 2015 college rankings released by U.S. News & World Report on Sept. 9. Messiah also continues as a top 10 “Great School, Great Price” (ranked eighth). For a third consecutive year, Messiah College was also ranked as a “Best Undergraduate Engineering Program” in the country (#63 out of 200). The undergraduate engineering rankings are based on peer assessment surveys conducted in spring 2014 from other ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited institutions. President Kim Phipps has been named the 2014 recipient of The Centennial Award, the highest honor of Kent State University’s School of Communication Studies. This award honors alumni “who are nationally and internationally recognized for their preeminent contributions to their profession’s or life’s work as they relate to the field of communication, education, scholarship and community.” President Phipps earned her Ph.D. in communication studies from Kent State University. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has extended accredited status to all three tracks in Messiah College’s popular Master of Arts in Counseling. The tracks include clinical mental health; marriage, couple and family; and school counseling.

The “First Destination” survey report for the Messiah College Class of 2013 reveals that 95% of respondents from that graduating class were employed or enrolled in graduate school or a professional program within six months of graduation.

Our 2013 graduates are working at places like Ernst & Young, LLC, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, General Motors, Hershey Entertainment and Resorts, Michael Waltrip Racing, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, The Dow Chemical Company and University of California San Diego Medical Center.

They are advancing their degree at places like Columbia University, Drexel University, Duke University, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Virginia Tech and Wesley Theological Seminary.

Senior psychology major/French minor Alexandra Burris ’15 is among a small group of students awarded a de Jager prize for exceptional academic performance during her Scholars’ Semester in Oxford. Burris’ academic performance during the 2014 spring semester earned the de Jager—administered by Scholarship and Christianity in Oxford—which recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding application and ability of their educational experience.

“Since I had visiting student status, I could go pretty much anywhere in the university, including in the Bodleian Library, which is a really rare opportunity,” noted Burris about her Oxford experience. “I also got to study one-on-one with university professors, which was an incredible honor. The depth of insight they provided was amazing.”

Burris is Messiah’s fourth student to receive the de Jager prize since its founding in 2013. She joins alums Jessica Barnett ’13, Kaitlyn Kulp ’14 and Nate Van Wyck ’13.
