The Oakes Museum Receives Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services

September 24th, 2014

The Oakes Museum of Natural History received a $98,500 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which museum director Ken Mark explains will purchase new storage units to facilitate proper conservation of the museum’s artifacts. Meeting the necessary requirements for preserving and improving its collections is the next step in the museum’s accreditation process; the current outdated storage units cannot keep the stored artifacts well-maintained and secure, which has hindered the goal of accreditation.

As a federal organization that provides monetary support for the nation’s museums and libraries, IMLS enables museums to deliver valuable services that cultivate lifelong learning and cultural engagement. Messiah College will match the IMLS’s grant, thus providing an additional $98,500 to the project.

This project along with other completed conservation efforts, will allow the Oakes Museum to become an even greater asset to visitors and the Messiah College community at large.
