Messiah College receives The Carnegie Foundation 2015 Community Engagement Classification

downey_editThe Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has selected Messiah College to receive the Community Engagement Classification—one of 240 U.S. colleges and universities to receive the designation in 2015. Colleges and universities with an institutional focus on community engagement were invited to apply for the classification, first offered in 2006. In order to be selected, institutions had to provide detailed descriptions and examples of institutionalized practices of community engagement that showed alignment among mission, culture, leadership, resources and practices.

Messiah Senior Jeremy Payne named 2014 National Player of the Year

2014-POY-Payne-nowriting_editThe National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) recognized Messiah senior Jeremy Payne in an outstanding way this week, as he was named the 2014 National Player of the Year.

The award for Payne is the second of his career, making him the only repeat honoree for NCAA Division III men since the award was started in 1996. The Player of the Year award is also the eighth in 13 seasons for Messiah men’s soccer.

Messiah College Programming Team Wins First Place in Mid-Atlantic Region Contest

Congratulations to Falcons I, the Messiah College Programming Team of Nathan Chaney (’15, Computer and Information Science and Engineering), Zach Felix (’14, Mathematics), and Marcus Upton (’15, Engineering), for winning first place in the Mid-Atlantic Region Programming Contest of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), held Nov. 1 2014 at Radford University. Messiah College wins first place in opera competition

November 21st, 2014

The Messiah College Opera Workshop won first place in the Division 1 category of the National Opera Association’s 2013-2014 Opera Competition for its production of The Medium by Gian Carlo Menotti. The competition is divided into five divisions based on the size of the program and production resources.

Dr. Damian Savarino serves as music and stage director of the Opera Workshop. Dr. Timothy Dixon conducted the orchestra members and Tom Ryan provided scenic and lighting design.

Messiah College Women’s Soccer Featured in ESPN Story

Professor of Art Daniel Finch chosen as artist for public art mural

November 6th, 2014

Associate Professor of Art Daniel Finch was selected by the Susquehanna Art Museum to paint the public mural at their new location at N. 3rd and Calder Streets in Harrisburg. His mural (rendering shown to the right) was selected with the help of more than 1,000 community members.

The mural design “…incorporates a combination of symbols “meant to serve as an image of beauty, hope, and optimism regarding Harrisburg’s future.”

New Community Partnership Brings Medication Collection Box to Messiah

November 4th, 2014

The Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office in partnership with Pennsylvania American Water and Upper Allen Township officials announced the installation of a medication collection box at Messiah College. This partnership offers disposal options to the campus community and local residents to anonymously and safely dispose of unwanted and expired drugs and medication.

The new box is located at the Engle Health Center and is accessible Monday through Friday when the health center is open. The collection box program is intended to get drugs safely off the streets, keeping them away from youth and protecting local waterways.

The Pulse’s Ally Coonradt attends Antares rocket launch and explosion

October 31st, 2014

On Oct. 9, The Pulse’s (Messiah’s student-run media) social media manager Ally Coonradt was selected for media credentials to attend the launch of the Orbital Science Corporation’s Antares rocket launch at Wallops Island on Virginia’s east shore. She was the only attendee who was a member of college media.
