Advice for parents sending a kid off to college

Heading off to college is a big deal — for students and their parents. On June 8, the Harrisburg Patriot-News ran a story that included interviews with local admissions professionals, including Messiah’s own Dana Britton, to find out what every parent (and their student) should know about that first year away from home.

Career Center surveys 2010 job outlook for grads

April 30th, 2010

Christy Hanson, director of the Career Center, notes that the challenging economic times have caused some recruiters to trim back their visits, especially to smaller colleges like Messiah. Hanson, quoted in the April 29 “U.S. News & World Report,” tells graduates to “think smart and strategically about how you’re building  own brand and distinguishing yourself against other candidates.”

School children need support system

Sue Hasseler, dean of the school of education and social sciences and community engagement, wrote an op-ed for the April 18 Patriot-News clearly pressing for teachers, families, and other local community organizations to invest in the education of children. The opinion piece was written after Messiah partnered with the Harrisburg-based Martin Luther King Leadership Development Institute to bring Dr. Steve Perry of the Capital Prep Magnet School in Hartford, Conn. to speak to parents and teachers in the Harrisburg City School District.

Rioux explores the trend of films marketed primarily to Christians

Patriot-News reporter Chris Mautner talks with Messiah’s Jeff Rioux, director of the Larsen Student Union and campus activities, about the latest trend in faith-based films marketed almost exclusively to Christian audiences like the recently released “To Save a Life.” Marketing to Christians was likely borne from the success of “The Passion of the Christ,” according to Rioux in a Jan. 22 article.

CCCU “Advance” features Philly campus and message from President Phipps

“Advance,” the quarterly publication of the Council for Christian College and Universities (CCCU) references Messiah’s Philadelphia campus in an article about how CCCU campuses are building bridges between campus and city life. The fall issue also includes a column by President Kim Phipps about the need to challenge students to engage in authentic, hospitable conversation.

Op-ed notes the power of forgiveness

Richard Hughes, senior fellow in the Ernest L. Boyer Center, considers the power of forgiveness and how it could be used in the city of Harrisburg in a November 3 op-ed in the Harrisburg Patriot-News. The Boyer Center teamed up with WITF and the Central Pennsylvania Diocese of the Episcopal Church to watch and discuss the award-winning film, ” The Power of Forgiveness.”
