Geoffrey Galt Harpham to discuss wealth and abundance during Messiah College Spring Humanities Symposium

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 30, 2013) — Geoffrey Galt Harpham, president and director of the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle, N.C., will join Messiah College during its annual Spring Humanities Symposium, Feb. 18-22. Harpham will deliver the keynote address, “Wealth: The Promises and Perils of Abundance,” on Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. in Parmer Hall, located in the newly constructed Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. The event, sponsored by the Messiah College Center for Public Humanities, is free and open to the public.

About Geoffrey Galt Harpham
Harpham, the fifth president and director of the National Humanities Center, received training as a literary scholar before publishing several distinguished books. His first title, “Grotesque: Strategies of Contradiction in Art and Literature” (1982) set the stage for a career of diverse work, including 10 editions of “A Glossary of Literary Terms” (2011). Harpham’s literary interests include the role of ethics in literary study, the place of language in intellectual history and the work of Joseph Conrad, an English novelist and short-story writer. In recent years, Harpham has become a prominent historian and advocate for the humanities, ultimately receiving fellowships from the J.S. Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Continue reading…

Messiah College to host February open house for prospective students

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 29, 2013) — Messiah College will host an open house on Feb. 18 for all prospective students. The day will be full of opportunities to explore the campus and learn about admission policies, financial aid, academic programs and community life. Prospective students may register online at messiah.edu or by calling the admissions office at 800-233-4220 or 717-691-6000.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Eisenhower Campus Center with an opening presentation at 9 a.m. in Brubaker Auditorium. Faculty, staff and current students will be conducting information sessions about Messiah College distinctives, campus life and the more than 80 majors offered. Messiah College professor to lecture on Fulbright Fellowship experience in Cyprus

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 29, 2013) — Messiah College educator Michael Cosby, professor of New Testament and Greek, spent four months in Cyprus on a senior Fulbright research grant studying Barnabas, the Cypriot mentor of the apostle Paul. Cosby will talk about his experience and findings at 7 p.m. on Feb. 12 in Parmer Cinema in Boyer Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

By exploring ancient texts and interviewing Cypriots, Cosby discovered how Barnabas, an innovative peacemaker in the New Testament, became a symbol of Greek Cypriot nationalism after centuries of turmoil and political intrigue. Continue reading…

Messiah College ensembles to perform music gala in February

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 25, 2013)—The Messiah College Department of Music will host a Music Gala to introduce the spring concert series. The concert, which will feature several music department instrumental and choral ensembles, will take place on Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. in Parmer Hall, located in the newly constructed Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play to perform as part of Messiah College Cultural Series

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 25, 2013) —Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play, a dynamic ensemble that specializes in jazz, folk and blues music, will perform the third concert in the 2012-2013 Cultural Series season at Messiah College on Feb. 15.  The concert will take place at 8 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel on the college’s Grantham campus. Tickets are $23 and can be purchased by contacting the Messiah College ticket office at 717-691-6036 or tickets@messiah.edu.

About Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play
Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play, a band comprised of versatile musicians Peter “Madcat” Ruth, Joel Brown and Chris Brubeck, hold onto roots that date back nearly 40 years. In 1969, Ruth and Brubeck began touring as young rock musicians under the name “New Heavenly Blue.” Brubeck went on to form Crofut & Brubeck, a unique, banjo-driven band that featured Brown on guitar. In 1999, Brubeck united with Ruth and Brown to form Triple Play, a trio that has developed a national following. Paul deBarros, writer for the Seattle Times, described Triple Play as a band with “good-time rhythm, unbridled joy and the sweet release but bittersweet aftertaste of the blues.” The band most recently produced “Live at Arthur Zankel Music Center,” which debuted in early 2012.  Continue reading…

Messiah College theatre department to present family-friendly musical “A Year with Frog and Toad”

(Jan. 17, 2013) —Arnold Lobel’s beloved Frog and Toad books jump from page to stage as the Messiah College Department of Theatre and Dance presents the endearing musical “A Year with Frog and Toad.” Performances run Feb. 7-9 and Feb. 14-15 at 7 p.m. with matinee performances on February 10, 16 and 17 at 3 p.m. Meet all the characters at the cookie celebration following each show. All performances take place in Miller Theatre, located in Climenhaga Building. Tickets cost $7 for students and children under 12 and $11 for general admission. Messiah College exceeds Centennial Campaign goal and raises $46.2 million

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 15, 2013) — Messiah College has successfully completed its Centennial Campaign, a $40 million fundraising effort to construct the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts and to raise funds for student-focused initiatives and scholarship endowments. The college began the campaign in 2007, completed it in December 2012 and exceeded its $40 million goal by $6.2 million.

“We are deeply grateful to the many alumni, parents and community friends who supported the Centennial Campaign,” said President Kim S. Phipps. “Their generosity ensures that Messiah continues to provide excellent facilities and competitive scholarship funding to make Messiah College an appealing, viable educational choice for students.”

The Centennial Campaign was co-chaired by George Parmer, regional business leader and Messiah College Trustee, and David M. “Kelly” Phipps, attorney at law. Continue reading…

Aughinbaugh Art Gallery at Messiah College displays work of artist Dale Inglett

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 14, 2013) — Dale Inglett, an artist who uses several forms of media to explore identity, time and existence, will exhibit his work from Feb. 4 to March 8 at the Aughinbaugh Art Gallery, Climenhaga Building, on Messiah College’s Grantham campus. The artist will speak about his work on Feb. 8 at 4:15 p.m. in the gallery. The exhibit, talk and reception are free and open to the public.

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 3, 2013) — Messiah College Multicultural Programs will host Samuel “Billy” Kyles as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration speaker on Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. Kyles, pastor of Monumental Baptist Church in Memphis, Tenn., was a friend and colleague of King’s and an eyewitness to his assassination. He will deliver a lecture, “Speaking Truth to Power: Courage and Conviction for Challenging Times.” The lecture is free and open to the public. Continue reading…
