Alum wins local Entrepreneur of the Year award

January 3rd, 2012

Ryan Keith, a 2002 graduate who founded Forgotten Voices International, was the first leader of a non-profit to win the Harrisburg Regional Chamber’s “Entrepreneur of the Year” award. Keith is being recogized for the jobs his organization is creating in villages across southern Africa. The Harrisburg Patriot-News profiled Keith in their December 30 issue.

Alums earns Soccer Coach of the Year recognition

December 15th, 2011

Alum Matt Billman has been named the 2011 All-Sentinel Boys Soccer Coach of the Year by the Carlisle Sentinel newspaper. The award recognizes Billman’s outstanding season coaching the Cumberland Valley boy’s soccer team and his work to develop a soccer camp in Guinea, Africa.

Alumni marathoners run for glory of God

December 15th, 2011

Messiah College alums Eric Bofinger and Pat Hager earned the top two spots after outstanding runs at the Rehoboth Seashore Marathon on Dec. 10. Both talk credit their faith and their experiences as Messiah students for their performance in a Dec. 15  Philly Burbs article.

Alumna shares joy of her job

Cindy Funck `78, a children’s librarian at the Annville Free Library (Lebanon County, Pa.), was recently profiled in the Sept. 25 Lebanon Daily News regular column, “Just Folks.” Funck, who reads to more than 100 kids per week, explained how she views her job positively impacting the lives of young children while also helping them grow their vocabularies and love of reading.

Alum saves a man’s life

September 27th, 2011

Bryan Doo `95 was playing pick-up basketball at a Boston-area community center when his teammate went into cardiac arrest. Doo, head strength and conditioning coach for the Boston Celtics, acted quickly and helped save the man’s life. His heroic response in mid-September received attention in the Boston media market.

Alumnus and former faculty member turns 100!

September 26th, 2011

K. B. Hoover, a beloved alumnus who returned to teach biology for nearly 30 years, turned 100 earlier this month. Hoover was celebrated at a gathering of friends and family and was recognized by the Upper Allen Township commissioners for his contributions to local govermnet. The Carlisle Sentinel wrote about the township recognition in a Sept. 23 article.

Messiah grads leads local girl’s soccer team through successful season

June 30th, 2011

Seth Lehman, 2005 graduate, credits his successful year of leading the Cumberland Valley women’s soccer team to the excellent example he saw modeled as a player at Messiah College. Lehman, whose team was 27-1 overall and won the Mid-Penn, District 3 and PIAA spring championships, was named the 2011 Sentinel Coach of the Year from the local Carlisle Sentinel newspaper.

Chris Heisey remembered in Billings

Chris Heisey, the Messiah alum who has worked his way into the Major Leagues, is interviewed by the Billings Gazette,  the hometown newspaper of the first farm team he was on before making his way to the Cincinnati Reds team. The article ran March 25.

Alum teaching sustainable development in Thailand

February 2nd, 2011

Laura Meitzner Yoder ’93 currently teaches at the International Sustainable Development Studies Institute (ISDSI) in Chiang Mai, Thailand.  Yoder has practiced her focus areas of tropical agriculture (plant breeding, seed systems, and ethnobotany), community development in conflict areas, and social research with local universities in Ecuador, Honduras, Indonesia, East Timor, and Thailand. She shared her experiences in a recent article for Intervarsity.
