Student Matthew Elton demonstrates mastery of Chinese language at national competition and wins scholarship to Chinese university

Matthew Elton, a junior communications major, is mastering more than just the English language. Elton recently competed in and won third place in a Chinese language competition in New York City called Chinese Bridge Competition. The competition is sponsored by the Chinese Language Council International and organized by the New York Service Center for Chinese Study Fellows.

Messiah College registered dietitian examination pass rate is in the 96th percentile nationally

Over the past 5 years, Messiah Nutrition and Dietetics graduates who have been accepted to and completed accredited dietetic internships have achieved a 100% pass rate on the national registered dietician exam.  Congratulations to these alumni!

Wrestler Michael Bressler receives Scholar All-American honors

Only 250 of 1,500 Division III wrestlers nationwide receive Scholar All-American honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association.  Michael Bressler, a senior business administration major from Odenton, Maryland is among this prestigious group.

Messiah swimming team earns Scholar All American status for excellent cumulative grade point average

 The College Swimming Coaches Association of America has presented the swimming  team of Messiah College with the Team Scholar All American Award, an honor for teams that achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Messiah’s team grade point average actually exceeds the 3. 0 minimum and is at 3.29!

Introduction to Anthropology students win first place, honorable mentions in national essay contest

 Student Joshua Matthews won first place for his essay – “Finding Purpose”—in the 7th Annual Be the Star You Are! essay contest sponsored by US Bank. The winning essay can be read at www.bethestaryouare.org/Read/Contest.html.

Students Alison French, Sarah Leonard, Brenna Stewart, and Kaitlin King were each recognized with honorable mentions for the essays they submitted to the national essay contest sponsored by Be the Star You Are, an organization committed to empowering women, families, and youth-at-risk through improved literacy and positive media.

All awardees were students in Jenell Paris’ Intro to Anthology course and wrote about the service-learning experiences.

Soccer teams rack up post season honors including both National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Player of the Year awards

 For the first time, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) named a repeat player of the year: Amanda Naeher.

 Geoff Pezon was named men’s player of the year by the NSCAA.

Voice students excel at statewide competition

January 3rd, 2011

Congratulations to the following voice students who won or placed in their categories at The National Association of Teachers of Singing Allegheny Mountain Chapter’s annual voice competition held at Susquehanna University. Voice students from colleges and universities throughout the state, as well as high school students from private studios throughout central Pennsylvania, enter the competition.

Elise Manning (winner in freshman college women), Emily Masincup (semi-finalist in freshman college women), and Sarah Hamilton (winner in junior college women) are students of Elaine Henderson, senior lecturer in music. Jonathan Eastburn (winner in junior college men) is a student of Linda Tedford, director of choral activities.

Senior nutrition and dietetics student earns national scholarship

Roanna Martin `11, a senior nutrition and dietetics student, recently received a nationally competitive scholarship from the American Dietetic Association Foundation (ADAF). The scholarship honors ADAF chair, Judith L. Dodd, MS, LDN, RD. 

Martin is active on campus as a resident assistant and Student Nutrition Awareness Coalition officer; serves with the Joshua Farm in Harrisburg, and studied abroad in Africa where she worked with Food for the Hungry.

WITF airs the “sounds of Spain” as recorded by two students on a May cross-cultural trip

Students Matt Babcock and Scott Hoeckele were equipped by local public radio station WITF to record the “sounds of Spain” during their recent cross-cultural trip there in May 2010. The two students talk about their experience traveling throughout the country against a soundtrack of noises and sounds they recorded along the way.

Three Messiah students win scholarships from the PA Institute of Certified Public Accountants

July 23rd, 2010

Each year the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants awards scholarships to students who demonstrate intellectual capacity, leadership potential, financial need, and the desire to pursue a career in accounting. This year, three Messiah students – Mitchell Martin, Brandon Kiser, and Hien Nguyen – were awarded scholarships. Kathleen Greulich was recognized as an outstanding college senior. Only Penn State University had more representation among the scholarship winners.
