Linda Tedford, director of choral activities at Messiah College and director of the Susquehanna Chorale, has been awarded the prestigious Elaine Brown Award for Choral Excellence from the American Choral Directors Association of Pennsylvania (ACDA). The award is given annually to a veteran choral director who exemplifies outstanding work in choral art.

Students benefit from new book by Messiah College Internship Center director which helps them develop professional skills for the workplace

Messiah College appoints its first full-time sustainability coordinator

Following a successful year of effectively leading a Sustainability Committee comprised of students, faculty and staff as well as implementing several new campuswide creation care initiatives, Craig Dalen has been appointed Messiah College’s first full-time sustainability coordinator. (During the 2010-2011 academic year, Dalen served in this role on a part-time basis.)

The Union Cafe in the Larsen Student Union wins Silver Medal in the Loyal E. Horton Awards competition from the National Association of College and University Food Services

 Larsen Student Union’s eatery, The Union Cafe, has been recognized with a Silver Medal from the National Association of College and University Food Services in the Retail Sales-Single Concept category.

The category is for college campus eateries specifically, not dining halls or cafeterias.  The recognition is based on a variety of aspects of The Union Café’s menu and service, including atmosphere, nutrition and wellness offerings, online ordering capabilities, and menu variety.

Messiah College Professor Edward Davis invited to New Zealand university as a Fulbright Specialist

June 14th, 2011

GRANTHAM, Pa. (June 14, 2011) — Edward B. Davis, distinguished professor of the history of science at Messiah College, will be a guest lecturer of the department of theology and religion at the University of Otego in Dunedin, New Zealand, courtesy of a short-term grant opportunity through the Fulbright Specialist Program. He will also speak in Auckland and other locations.  Davis will give a series of lectures, workshops and seminars on historical and contemporary aspects of religion and science, especially in the United States but also during the Scientific Revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries. Academic paper by professor Nance McCown about business relationship management earns recognition from Public Relations Society of America

Nance McCown, professor of communication, received the Top Faculty Paper Award for her paper, “Intersections and Overlaps: Building Leader-Employee Relationships through Internal Public Relations, Leadership Style, and Workplace Spirituality.”

Ya-Ting Chang and Peter Sirotin of College Mendelssohn Piano Trio tapped to direct the Market Square Concert Series in Harrisburg

March 31st, 2011

 Ya-Ting Chang and Peter Sirotin have accepted new roles as the co-leaders of Market Square Concerts, a series that brings the nation’s best chamber musicians to Harrisburg. Chang and Sirotin founded the Mendelssohn Piano Trio, an ensemble-in-residence at Messiah College and both teach at various venues in the region. Their tenure at Market Square Concerts begins July 1.

History professor John Fea examines the question of whether America was founded as a Christian nation in his new book

The question of whether America was truly founded as a Christian nation is one that is hotly debated on today’s political stages. It is also the primary question addressed by the new book, “Was America Founded as a Christian Nation,” by John Fea, associate professor of American history and chair of the history department at Messiah College. Published by Westminster John Knox Press, “Was America Founded as a Christian Nation” is a historical primer that examines the title question through three different lenses: by considering the history of the idea that the United States is a Christian nation; by analyzing whether or not the American Revolution was a Christian event; and by investigating the religious beliefs of the founding fathers.

Employees surpass goal with 2010 giving to the United Way of the Capital Region

 Once again Messiah College employees have generously given to the annual United Way campaign, surpassing the goal of $35,000 by donating $36,238. One-hundred-forty-two employees participated in the campaign this year.

Raeann Hamon selected as National Council on Family Relations Fellow for 2010 based on her outstanding contributions to the field of family science

Raeann R. Hamon, Ph.D., CFLE, has been selected as a National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) Fellow for 2010.

NCFR Fellows were nominated by their peers and selected for their history of outstanding contributions to the field of family studies in such areas as published scholarship, innovative and influential teaching presentations, development and implementation of significant intervention of programs designed to promote healthy family relations, development and implementation of innovative curricular for training professionals in family studies, social policy support for family issues, and a consistent record of superior contributions to NCFR over time.
