Messiah’s sustainability efforts celebrated in “Green Awakenings,” a report from creation care network Renewal

February 17th, 2010

Renewal, a student-led movement working on Christian campuses to help better take care of God’s creation, has selected Messiah College as one of 50 Christian college campuses to be featured in the new publication, “Green Awakenings.”

The report celebrates Messiah’s recent sustainability efforts, including:
• Ongoing biodiesel project to convert waste vegetable oil from on-campus dining facilities into biodiesel fuel for use in campus vehicles.

• Development and construction of the Clifford L. Jones Solar Scholar Pavilion, an educational lab for Messiah students and the more than 7,500 elementary school children who visit the on-campus Oakes Museum each year.

• Maintenance of a quarter-acre organic garden modeling community-supported agriculture. In 2009, the garden produced 3,700 pounds of produce.

• Studying sustainable food production systems in Cuba, practicing urban agriculture in Philadelphia and Harrisburg, and using sustainable agriculture skills in Honduras and Bolivia.

• Design and implementation of a rain garden stormwater management system at a new, nearby housing development. The system is the first of its kind in the township.
