Messiah College invests in the humanities with scholarship program

October 15th, 2013

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 15, 2013) — Messiah College signals its commitment to the humanities and the value of a liberal arts education with the creation of the Humanities Scholars Program, a four-year scholarship program for students enrolled in the college’s School of the Humanities. Each year, 10 Dean’s Scholarships in the Humanities will be awarded to accomplished, incoming students selecting majors in the following departments at Messiah College: biblical and religious studies, communication, English, history, modern languages, philosophy, and politics and international relations.

Interested applicants must submit an essay and list advanced coursework or extracurricular activities related to the humanities. Finalists will be invited for an on-campus interview.

Students accepted into the program will receive $2,500 their first year at Messiah and are eligible to renew their scholarship each subsequent year for a $10,000 total scholarship. Humanities Scholars will take part in a two-day seminar about the integration of faith and learning, have lunch with distinguished humanities professors, attend a dinner with the annual Humanities Symposium guest lecturer, serve in a leadership role within Messiah’s School of the Humanities and be paired with an alumni mentor with a humanities degree.

“The Humanities Scholars Program is designed to highlight and enhance student experiences of our distinctives in the humanities at Messiah College,” says Pete Powers, dean of the School of Humanities. “Participants in the program will deepen their understanding of the relationship of their discipline to Christian faith, will experience the humanities as an opportunity for service to others and will be mentored toward productive careers after graduation. These are distinctives of our educational program for all our students; this particular program will enhance our commitment to these outcomes at Messiah College.”
