Messiah College hosts Nobel Peace Laureate winner Leymah Gbowee

February 25th, 2013

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 25, 2013) — The office of the president at Messiah College welcomes Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee, a Liberian peace activist, trained social worker and women’s right advocate, to lecture on March 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Parmer Hall in the Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. The lecture is free and open to the public; however, a ticket is required. For tickets, contact the ticket office at 717-691-6036 or visit messiah.edu/tickets.

About Leymah Gbowee
Leymah Gbowee, born in 1972 in central Liberia, became a social worker during her country’s first civil war in 1999. During this time, Gbowee helped organize the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace movement, an interreligious coalition of Christian and Muslim women that staged pray-ins and non-violent protests. The pressure her organization put on leadership in Liberia paved the way for the election of Africa’s first female head of state, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Today, Gbowee serves as the founder and president of the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa and the cofounder and executive director of the Women Peace and Security Network Africa. Gbowee received the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize for her work in Africa.
