Esteemed scholar in African Christianity Emmanuel Katongole to lecture at Messiah College

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 5, 2013) — The Messiah College Annual Lectures on Religion and Society will host Emmanuel Katongole, an accomplished scholar in African Christianity and priest in the Catholic Church. The lecture, “Christian Social Imagination: Envisioning the Kingdom of God Today,” will explore the connections between faith and public life in African society.  Scheduled for Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel, the lecture is free and open to the public. About Emmanuel Katongole
Born and educated in Uganda, Katongole became ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1987. Since then, Katongole served at parishes in Africa, Belgium and the United States. Continuing his studies, he earned his doctorate degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. An expert in the study of Africa, the theology of reconciliation and lament and Catholicism in the global South, Katongole served as an associate professor of theology and world Christianity at Duke Divinity School. Katongole has written books on Christian social imagination, including his most recent book, “The Sacrifice of Africa: A Political Theology for Africa.” Katongole now serves as an associate professor of theology and peace studies at Kroc Institute for Peace Studies at University of Notre Dame.
