Student selected to sing with Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra

Dorea Schmidt `09 will perform as Leila in the symphony’s February concert production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Iolanthe.”

Schmidt, a theatre major, is a voice student of Damian Savarino, senior lecturer in music, and was referred to Stuart Malina, artistic director of the Harrisburg Symphony, by Linda Tedford, director of choral activities and artist-in-residence, at Messiah.

Messiah soccer teams produce two players of the year

Senior J.D. Binger and junior Amanda Naeher are recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with Division III Player of the Year titles.

Binger, a Belvidere, Ill. native, has been a defensive anchor for the Falcons throughout his career. He started all 26 games this season and converted his penalty kick during the championship game shootout.

Naeher, a native of Seymour, Conn., led the team in scoring with 33 goals and 6 assists and holds two school records: single-season goals and points total.

Special Olympics names Messiah College “Pennsylvania School of the Year”

The College was recognized for annually hosting Area M’s Special Olympics and for volunteering more than 58,000 community service yearly.

Messiah’s nomination highlighted that “Messiah College promotes community awareness by teaching their students to build community and to champion the rights of others less fortunate. Last year students volunteered more than 58,000 community service hours.”

Furthermore, “the College has totally opened their arms to Area M and has become an integral part of our world. The entire campus participates in the games from the college president to the maintenance staff to the students. We would not be able to help as many athletes as we do, if it was not for the fantastic dedication and support we get from the college. They are our HEROES!”

Messiah College is in the forefront of Christian colleges embracing creation care

College’s stewardship efforts headline Center for American Progress’ survey of evangelical environmentalism.

The article cites the College’s sponsorship of the first-ever recycling initiative at Creation, a popular Christian music festival held each June in Mt. Union, PA. More than 60,000 bottles and cans were recycled. The article also highlights the on-campus community garden, a project initiated by a small group of students and supported by more than 75 volunteers.

Collaboratory students and faculty develop innovative solutions to assist young people with autism or Asperger’s

A state grant funds further development of WERCware, a device that allows individuals with high-functioning autism or Asperger’s to have a virtual coach in their places of employment.

Students record festival, bull fight, and workshop sounds while on cross-cultural trip to Spain

These sounds, along with interviews, will be broadcast on public radio Friday and Saturday.

Faculty members Randy Zwally, director of the guitar studies program, and Kim Yunez, professor of Spanish, took students on a cross-cultural trip to Spain to experience and explore the country’s history, architecture, and culture while recording sounds in a variety of locations, including the shop of renowned guitar artisan Antonio Marin.

Local National Public Radio station, WITF 89.5, will broadcast reports about the trip as well as the recorded sounds on Sept. 5 and Sept. 6.

The “Artbeat” feature will air on Sept. 5 at 5:35 a.m., 7:35 a.m., and between 2:30 and 3 p.m. The Sept. 6 broadcast will be twice during “Weekend America:” either at 1:29 and 3:29 p.m. or 2:29 and 4:29 p.m.

Making it easy to get a passport

To prepare students early for study abroad and international service, mission work, and internship opportunities, Messiah launched a new program to help all first-year students obtain a passport. County officials will be on campus to process passports in early September.

Educator and students conduct archaeological fieldwork in Cyprus

August 13th, 2008

Three seniors and professor David Pettegrew continued excavation work at the Pyla-Koutsopetria Archaeological Project on the southern coast of Cyprus earlier this summer. International teams of students and professors uncovered small trenches and a fortification wall that point to a settlement from around 600-100 B.C.

Faculty and students recorded their findings and experiences in a series of blog postings.

The results of the season will be posted on the PKAP website.

Student’s accomplishments capture the attention of the NCAA

March 24th, 2008

Cerebral palsy hasn’t stopped student Stevie Baum from continually besting her personal times in track and field and traveling with Messiah’s Collaboratory to ensure physically disabled people in Mali have access to water and sanitation facilities. The NCAA News recently featured Baum on their web site.
