Canadian folk group The Wailin’ Jennys comes to Messiah College

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 24, 2011) — On March 17, Messiah College will host The Wailin’ Jennys for a Cultural Series concert. The performance, which features the Canadian folk singing of three women, begins at 8 p.m. in Miller Auditorium in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center. This tour engagement of The Wailin’ Jennys is partially funded through the Mid Atlantic Tours program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Messiah College President Kim Phipps named chair of the board of directors of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 17, 2011) — Messiah College President Kim S. Phipps has been named chair of the board of directors of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU), a Washington, D.C.-based higher education association of 184 institutions around the world. Phipps has been a member of the CCCU board of directors since 2005. In 2009 she became vice chair, and then, in January, was elected to a two-year term as president. Phipps is the first woman to chair the 14-member board. Three additional schools in Pennsylvania are members of the CCCU, including Eastern University, Geneva College and Waynesburg University.

“I am honored to serve the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities as chair of the board of directors,” Phipps said. “I look forward to working with the CCCU’s talented administrative leadership and member campuses to strategically advance the cause of Christian higher education.” Continue reading…

(Feb. 15, 2011) — Entrepreneur and philanthropist Derek Hathaway, former chief executive officer of Harsco Corporation, will talk about “Integrity and Public Life” at 7:30 p.m. on March 8 as the featured lecture in Messiah College’s Executive Leadership Series, The lecture is free and will be hosted in Hostetter Chapel on the college’s Grantham campus.

Artist, author, and disabilities advocate Joni Eareckson Tada to speak at Messiah College

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 11, 2011) — On March 4 Messiah College will host Christian artist, vocalist, radio host and author Joni Eareckson Tada for a 7:30 p.m. lecture, “Serving in the Midst of Suffering: Partnering to Make a Difference.” The lecture will take place at the Grantham Church, located at the edge of Messiah College’s campus. About Joni Eareckson Tada
A diving accident in 1967 left Joni Eareckson, then 17, a quadriplegic in a wheelchair, unable to use her hands. During her rehabilitation, Tada spent months learning how to paint with a brush between her teeth. In 1979, Tada founded Joni and Friends International Disability Center. Tada has written 46 books and numerous magazine articles. She has received a number of prestigious awards, including the National Association of Evangelicals’ “Layperson of the Year” in 1986 and the William Ward Ayer Award for excellence from the National Religious Broadcasters’ Association in 2002. Professor Michael Cosby will journey to Cyprus on Fulbright research grant

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 8, 2011) — Michael Cosby, distinguished professor of New Testament and Greek at Messiah College, received a Fulbright research grant to journey to Cyprus to conduct research on Joseph Barnabas, an important but neglected saint.

Although Barnabas was one of the most influential leaders of the early Christian movement, only one academic book has been written about him in over 100 years. Yet in the past century scholars have written hundreds of books on his understudy and co-worker, the Apostle Paul.  Continue reading…

Senior theatre majors to culminate their Messiah College career by showcasing talent in March senior projects

 GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 10, 2011) — Three anticipating graduates of Messiah College’s theatre department will conclude their studies and showcase individual talent by presenting senior projects from March 3 to 5. The first show will begin at 7 p.m., featuring Joshua Luther’s “Herewhere.” Tickets for Luther’s show are free but required for admission. Tickets for the 8 p.m. showings are $5 and will include “The Living Newspapers,” written and performed by Cara Thomas, followed by “Luna Park,” directed by Matthew Annis. All performances will take place in Miller Auditorium, located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on Messiah’s Grantham campus.
