His knack is not only brilliant insight about the developments in these areas, but also his willingness and ability to write for a general audience.<\/p>\n<p>(We are fortunate to welcome him this coming fall for our annual American Democracy Lecture &#8211; more details will follow, but please save the date for Monday October 28, 2024!)<\/p>\n<p>In his 2017\u00a0<em>Unstable Majorities: Polarization, Party Sorting and Political Stalemate,\u00a0<\/em>Dr. Fiorina offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policyed.org\/perspectivesonpolicy\/unstable-majorities\/video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clear and compelling alternative account for polarization<\/a> within contemporary American politics.\u00a0 Amid gridlock, acrimony and widely fluctuating policies (when passage can occur),\u00a0 the idea of polarization is front and center in our system.\u00a0 However, as we shall read in the analyses ahead, the causes are not what common thought would have us believe.\u00a0 As a result, realistic opportunities exist to work towards an improved political climate.<\/p>\n<p>If you are motivated by the video summary above and analyses that follow, a number of excellent, practical resources exist.\u00a0 Here are just a few:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The social science podcast\u00a0<em>Hidden Brain <\/em>produced 5 excellent episodes within its You 2.0 segment about how to address political conflict\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hiddenbrain.org\/podcast\/us-2-0-what-we-have-in-common\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What We Have in Common<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hiddenbrain.org\/podcast\/us-2-0-win-hearts-then-minds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Win Hearts, Then Minds<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hiddenbrain.org\/podcast\/us-2-0-living-with-our-differences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Living With Our Differences<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hiddenbrain.org\/podcast\/not-at-the-dinner-table\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Not at the Dinner Table<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hiddenbrain.org\/podcast\/us-2-0-lincolns-dilemma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lincoln&#8217;s Dilemma<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Pew Research has a wonderful season of its\u00a0<em>After the Fact\u00a0<\/em>podcast entitled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/articles\/2023\/10\/27\/beyond-polarization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beyond Polarization.\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>StoryCorps has a series called <a href=\"https:\/\/storycorps.org\/discover\/onesmallstep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One Small Step<\/a> that matches interested individuals on a notable difference, gives them background on each other and includes them in a moderated conversation, allowing them to learn more about each other and why they hold the views that they do.\n<ul>\n<li>Listen to a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.storycorps.org\/interviews\/delegate-sally-hudson-and-congressman-denver-riggleman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">great episode with individuals from different parties who have held office &#8211;<\/a>it is one of MANY great episodes.<\/li>\n<li>Check out a podcast series from Messiah University, modeled on this approach.\u00a0 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/2d1yIxjwENfteWa4pExs86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Politics of Listening<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>presents the fruits of an assignment by students in my Polling and Public Opinion course last spring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The National Governors Association has an initiative \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.org\/disagree-better\/\">Disagree Better<\/a>\u201d that has many great resources providing food for thought and action.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/startswith.us\/\">Starts with Us<\/a>\u00a0is an initiative that offers information and strategies to help the vast majority of individuals frustrated with the current state of conflict take action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As capstone closed at the end of the semester, students worked in groups to apply the lessons from Fiorina t0 problem-solving reforms.\u00a0 They left encouraged &#8211;
