Messiah receives $7500 grant from PA Department of Environmental Protection for creative environmental education program in campus apartments

Starting in the fall, students living in apartments on campus will be presented with mock utility bills that show their apartment’s actual power usage. The goal is to educate students about the amount of energy they use and to motivate them to conserve by doing little things like powering down computers, using fewer lights, and taking shorter showers. The goal is a 3% reduction in energy usage in the on-campus apartments.

Messiah College to install largest solar thermal system in region

Messiah College has contracted with Edwin L. Heim Company to install 112 solar panels on the roofs of a complex of student residence halls on the college’s Grantham campus to create the region’s largest solar thermal system. Construction will begin in mid-May and be completed by October. The panels will be installed on the roofs of the three residence halls—Miller, Hess and Grantham—that comprise Messiah’s North Complex. All the domestic hot water needs of those residences—totaling 113,000 square feet and about 470 students—will be met by this extensive, energy efficient solar collection system. Messiah noted on E-power Energy-Smart Business Honor Roll of PPL

March 4th, 2011

 PPL, a local electric utility, offers incentives, rebates, and discounts for institutions that demonstrate their commitment to reducing energy usage in a variety of ways including lighting, appliance recycling, and renewable energy sources, for example.

Messiah was recently offered the opportunity to join PPL’s E-power Energy-Smart Honor Roll for businesses.

Messiah College featured by the Princeton Review and U.S. Green Building Council in “Guide to 286 Green Colleges”

Messiah College is among 286 other colleges and universities nationwide named to the Princeton Review’s and U.S. Green Building Council’s guide of green colleges. The schools included in the guide are profiled for demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and holistic living. Messiah’s sustainability efforts celebrated in “Green Awakenings,” a report from creation care network Renewal

Renewal, a student-led movement working on Christian campuses to help better take care of God’s creation, has selected Messiah College as one of 50 Christian college campuses to be featured in the new publication, “Green Awakenings.”

The report celebrates Messiah’s recent sustainability efforts, including:
• Ongoing biodiesel project to convert waste vegetable oil from on-campus dining facilities into biodiesel fuel for use in campus vehicles.

• Development and construction of the Clifford L. Jones Solar Scholar Pavilion, an educational lab for Messiah students and the more than 7,500 elementary school children who visit the on-campus Oakes Museum each year.

• Maintenance of a quarter-acre organic garden modeling community-supported agriculture. In 2009, the garden produced 3,700 pounds of produce.

• Studying sustainable food production systems in Cuba, practicing urban agriculture in Philadelphia and Harrisburg, and using sustainable agriculture skills in Honduras and Bolivia.

• Design and implementation of a rain garden stormwater management system at a new, nearby housing development. The system is the first of its kind in the township.

Messiah wins Waste Watcher award for outstanding recycling efforts

The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association, and the Keystone Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America recognized Messiah College among the state’s most outstanding recycling programs with a Waste Watcher award.

According to the press release issued by Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania, “The Waste Watcher awards are given to recycling, waste reduction, reuse and composting programs in Pennsylvania that have exhibited exemplary performance. This year 70 plus municipalities, counties, private businesses, individuals and community organizations from throughout Pennsylvania are being recognized for going above and beyond what is mandated under Act 101 for their communities or programs.”

Messiah “crushes” the competition in recycling contest

Recyclemania, a 10-week competition that challenged colleges to out-recycle one another, ended with Messiah recycling 20.79 pounds per person and earning a state ranking of eighth!

Messiah College is in the forefront of Christian colleges embracing creation care

November 18th, 2008

College’s stewardship efforts headline Center for American Progress’ survey of evangelical environmentalism.

The article cites the College’s sponsorship of the first-ever recycling initiative at Creation, a popular Christian music festival held each June in Mt. Union, PA. More than 60,000 bottles and cans were recycled. The article also highlights the on-campus community garden, a project initiated by a small group of students and supported by more than 75 volunteers.

Messiah labeled as a “green college” by National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities

Messiah College is noted for its community garden, composting efforts, and attempts to limit paper usage.

Several months ago, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) solicited summaries of sustainability initiatives from its member institutions. NAICU recently compiled all those findings into a website where media, prospective students, and other interested parties can quickly see an overview of collegiate environmental efforts nationwide. Messiah College is pleased to be included in this important compendium of Green Colleges.
