Alumna Lucy Barnhouse `08 wins prestigious Fulbright Research Fellowship

April 2nd, 2013

Lucy Barnhouse, a 2008 graduate of the Messiah College History Department, has won a highly competitive Fulbright Research Fellowship to do archival graduate research in Germany during the next academic year. Barnhouse is currently studying medieval history at Fordham University.

Brent Sensenig `12 among top scorers on CPA exam

Alum Brent Sensenig `12 is one of 10 Pennsylvanians identified as having received the highest scores on the 2012 CPA exam, according to the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Messiah College Athletics inducts three new members into Hall of Honor and recognizes current scholar-athletes

A trio of talented alumni athletes was inducted into the College’s Hall of Honor of Feb. 15: Chris Boyles `02, former men’s track and field star and NCAA national champion; Christina (Vouriotis) Hutchinson `03, considered by many to be the best player to come through Messiah’s women’s basketball program; and Mike Shaker, a former coach considered the father of the College’s men’s basketball program.

In addition, six current student-athletes were recognized for their outstanding performance in both the classroom and competition. Congratulations to Luke Helmuth (men’s soccer), Lindsay King (women’s volleyball), Aaron Reynolds (men’s cross country), Dori Gyori (women’s basketball), Malcolm McDermond (swimming), and Stephanie Schell (softball). At the conclusion of the spring season, two winners will be announced from among these six finalists.

Alumna Melanie Howard `07 wins essay prize for doctoral candidates

February 11th, 2013

Melanie Howard’s essay about Mark 9:14-29 won the “Word & World Theology for Christian Ministry” journal’s top prize. Howard, a Ph.D. candidate at Luther Seminary in Minn., is a 2007 graduate of Messiah.

Alumna’s Virginia café featuring local, fresh produce wins Entrepreneur of the Year Award

Katrina Didot `89 was named the Harrisonburg-Rockingham (Va.) Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur of the Year for her restaurant, A Bowl of Good. The café, with two locations in Harrisonburg, Va., features flavors inspired by the world that use local ingredients.

Alum Grace Lankford wins Canon’s “Project Imagination” photo contest

January 22nd, 2013

A few years ago Grace Lankford `11 was at the Farm Show for a class assignment when she happened to glimpse a chick hatching out of its egg. She snapped a few photos, and now one of those photos—titled “Rest Easy”—earned her $500 in Canon products. In addition, actor Jamie Foxx selected her photo as one of 10 to inspire a short film he will produce with mentor Ron Howard. Lankford was a health and exercise science major.

Alums recognized for distinguished service to church and society

Alumna Melanie Ross `99 accepts faculty appointment at Yale Institute of Sacred Music

Melanie Ross `99, a music education major (specializing in piano), has been named assistant professor of liturgical studies at Yale Institute of Sacred Music and Yale Divinity School.

Alumnus Ben Fredrick ‘95 receives St. Clare Award for exemplifying Franciscan values by embracing the poor and marginalized

Ben Fredrick, a physician at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, has been chosen to receive an award from the Sisters of St. Francis in Sylvania, Ohio for his work in caring for the poor and marginalized. Fredrick has particularly done a good deal of work in Haiti.
