Messiah teams demonstrate why they’re champions

November 23rd, 2009

It was a heart-racing, nail-biting weekend for fans of Messiah’s field hockey, men’s soccer, and women’s soccer teams.

It started Saturday afternoon as the field hockey team laid their perfect season on the line at Ursinus College for a chance to play in the national championship game. After being behind early in the game, the Falcons rallied and defeated Ursinus 4-3, earning their seventh national championship appearance. The Falcons took on Salisbury University, a fierce competitor, and Salisbury walked away with the title after their 1-0 victory.

The men’s and women’s soccer teams were both in the hunt to defend their national titles, and played like national champions in two extremely close match-ups on Saturday. The women took on Otterbein College. The teams fought it out through regulation play and into the second overtime before the Falcons were able to find the net and win the game 1-0. They then soundly defeated Johns Hopkins University 3-1 on Sunday to clinch a spot in the NCAA Final Four.

It was a double overtime scenario for the men’s team as well on Saturday until they took the game against Johns Hopkins University 1-0. On Sunday, the men beat the University of Rochester 2-1 to earn their spot in the NCAA Final Four.

The soccer teams are making their sixth straight appearance in the Final Four. The tournament is being held in San Antonio, Texas, the weekend of December 4. The men will play Williams College and the women will play rival The College of New Jersey.
