Chad Clemens, an engineering student, stepped out of his comfort zone, he writes in a December 30 Harrisburg Patriot-News “As I See It” column, to do a service-learning project at Joshua Farm in downtown Harrisburg. Having been introduced to urban, sustainable gardening, Clemens now encourages, “broaden your horizons and step out of your comfort zone” to volunteer at a place like Joshua Farm.

Erin Hench grew up attending soccer camp at Messiah College. She was aware of the legacy of the men’s and women’s soccer teams and was thrilled to enroll at Messiah. A November 11 Carlisle Sentinel story highlights Erin’s outstanding soccer career as a Messiah Falcon.

Local news channel WGAL visited campus on November 4 to get footage of students and professors working hard to preserve what they could of a 400-year-old, 90-foot white oak tree that fell in September during Hurricane Irene. The tree is thought to be the oldest one on campus.

Messiah student Hope Johnson was featured in a half-page article in the April 10 issue of the Harrisburg Patriot-News. Hope has athetoid cerebral palsy, and despite the challenges it presents is excelling academicall. Hope is on course to become the College’s first nonambulatory, nonverbal graduate.

Student Allison Speck has had a rather unusual college experience that has included two bouts with cancer. The first-year student is an inspiration to many as she presses on with her schoolwork while battling cancer. The Harrisburg Patriot-News profiled Allison in their April 7 issue.

A native of Biatorbagy, Hungary, Dori Gyori came to central Pennsylvania her senior of high school and lived with Messiah Women’s Basketball Coach Mike Miller and his family. She quickly demonstrated her outstanding basketball skills on a high school team. Now, she is Messiah’s leading scorer and rebounder, according to a February 25 Harrisburg Patriot-News article.
