Messiah responds to earthquake devastation in Haiti
In the late afternoon on January 12, a powerful earthquake struck Haiti, destroying much of the capital and surrounding area, leaving thousands missing or dead and countless others homeless and without resource. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and does not have the infrastructure or resources to handle a crisis of this magnitude. We believe it is our Christian responsibility to pray for and support the Haitian people in their time of distress, and are currently partnering with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) to raise funds that will immediately and effectively respond to this emergency.
Ways we are trying to help
Many people within the Messiah community are affected by the disaster in Haiti. We join in prayer for the individuals directly impacted by this terrible disaster as well as those still seeking information about their families and loved ones. Students joined together to pray at the Reconciliation House on January 13.
Students and employees will also have the opportunity to donate money to assist MCC’s efforts.
- Donations will be accepted after chapel on January 19 and 21.
- The Student Activities Board will be taking up a collection at B-Sides on January 20 and the Coffeehouse on January 24.
- A loose change drive will be held on campus starting on January 19. Receptacles for change will be found at the Union, the Falcon Express, and in the lobby of Boyer Hall.
- Students and employees can also take donations directly to the Agape Center for Service and Learning. If a tax receipt is desired, the check should be made out to the Mennonite Central Committee.
