We have fun news of the Messiah Facebook page being resurrected! Simply go to “Messiah College Commuters” and like our page! Important events, opportunities, and information will be provided for the commuters to see. Don’t read this post without visiting. #HintHint #WinkWink

Seize the Day

The trees’ colours are changing from green to gold, the air is crisp an prime for delicate drizzles, and familiar sweatshirts are now toward the front of your closet. Fall has arrived folks, and I’m excited. For me, this means Pumpkin-spiced everything, binging Sherlock episodes, and my world smelling like gingersnap cookies. If you need me, make sure you bring some. I encourage you to seize everyday as a new adventure, and challenges as opportunities for you to be a rock star.

Let’s talk about Chapel.

Everyone would have received this in our email: Beginning of semester email (Commuters)

Image result for messiah college chapel

Chapel is not optional, it is mandatory, and should not be taken lightly. As commuters, we were granted grace to only attend 7 chapels per semester as opposed to the 14 that residential students must attend. If there is a conflict (work, internship, family complication, etc.) please notify College Ministries by filing a chapel attendance petition which can be found on your student self-service menu. College Ministries will then notify you whether or not they have accepted your request.

We are still loving our new lounge, thank you to those who signed the “Thank you cards” for President Phipps, Kathie Shafer, and the Frey family. Their hard work deserved notice, and it was important to me that we showed our appreciation. If you have not seen the new lounge, PLEASE VISIT US. It is wonderful, magical, and dreams come true there.

However, please notice that the new signs in the Lounge about the new wall installation of the small conference room that is being designed. This is the space with the white board and television around a table. Its original intent was to be a study space/cubicle area similar to those in the Murray Library. The wall installation will be occurring October 5.

Commuter Lounge Ribbon Cutting

Commuter Invitation Postcard 2017

Hey Messiah College Commuters! After relentless work this summer, the much anticipated NEW Commuter Lounge is finally finished! Bright, spacious, and unique to our needs, our new lounge on the lower level of Mountain View is incomparable to our original hovel in Hoffman. You should have received an invitation in the mail just like the one to the right. Please join us August 31st at 5:15 as President Kim Phipps dedicates the space with a ribbon-cutting!

The New Kid

IMG_0411

Hi! My name is Cate Cutting and I am the new Commuter Liaison. For the past few years this was a role carried by Justin Stimpson, who had worked so hard as the bridge between college administration and the needs of the commuter student body. He did a wonderful job, and I hope to continue his legacy as we open the new lounge he and I worked so hard to initiate!

About Me

I’m a sophomore commuter who is double majoring in Dance and Social Work.

I also work as the work-study in the Student Involvement and Leadership Program Office.

My other part-time jobs include teaching dance at Reverence Studios and being an in-home hairdresser. I have done both of these for two years.

I can be easily persuaded by chocolate and/or British TV shows.

If you should ever need me, my email is commuterservices@messiah.edu.

New Students

For all of the new students reading the Commuter Connection, welcome to Messiah College! We are so excited to have you join our community, especially at a time when opportunities for us are so flourishing! I am excited to meet all of you and hope you decide to attend the Welcome Week activities that Julie Cline (Assistant Director of the Student Involvement and Leadership Programs who oversees Commuter Services) has put in place for you specifically. It was a memorable and invaluable experience for me and I encourage you to take advantage of it. Commuters are allowed to have fun too.

New Year Checklist

  • Books are ordered and received
  • Your account Financial Aid needs are met
  • Your class schedule is printed and reviewed
  • On your calendar you have the Commuter Lounge Opening!

So. Everybody. Let’s do this thing!

Finals Week – You’ve Got This!

COMMUTER LOUNGE CLEAN-UP

MCLogo_CommuterServices_BW

As finals start, we want to wish you luck in the coming days and we pray that you do your best as you finish up your spring semester at Messiah College!

Did you know that in the summer the Hoffman basement (AKA Commuter Lounge) is converted into campus-wide laundry services area? In preparation of summer conferences, laundry services takes over the lounge, so we need to be sure that your personal belongings are cleaned out of the lockers and common area by the end of the day on Tuesday May 9th – last day of finals.   Anything left in the lockers or lounge on Wed May 10th will be taken to the Student Involvement office in Larsen Student Union (2nd floor) for the remainder of the week to be claimed.  Our office needs to make sure that the lounge space is cleaned out ASAP.

If you have any questions about your locker, please don’t hesitate to ask.  We are excited to unveil the BRAND NEW COMMUTER LOUNGE with BRAND NEW LOCKERS for the fall semester, so keep your eyes out on your email about when the time is right to reserve one.  Again good luck and have a great summer!

Service Day Is Coming!

Service Day Sign-ups!

A whole day to love your community.

Messiah is one of the few colleges in the world that offers up a whole day for service. It’s core to our mission—and to our faith.

Pray about this: We invite you to connect with one of local projects this April 20th. This does require sacrifice (you could sleep in, grade papers, do homework, do housework) and it might be uncomfortable—but we ask you to step into loving our neighbors in a variety of ways.

  1. Serve with Special Olympics: As CCC students & educators are serving as Buddies, we only have a handful of Buddy spots available for sophomores, juniors & seniors. We also need volunteers for set up, clean up, track events, logistics, and clowns. If you have clearances, please consider being a zone monitor. Sign up here: http://agapecenter-2017areamspecialomessiahcollege.partnershipplanners.org/volunteer/  (position details can be found within the form)
  1. Join a project: A variety of projects are led by members of the Messiah community—both on and off campus. Descriptions and sign-ups are on our site and will be updated daily: https://www.messiah.edu/info/22586/service_day
  1. Lead a project: Do you and your friends, club/team/group members, or co-workers want to serve together? Propose a project below! Please note that you’re responsible for coordinating your own transportation. Propose a project here: http://messiah.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_09hHAYmIf1vajRz

For questions or resources, please email agapecenter@messiah.edu or call x7255.

Thank you for considering participation in Service Day 2017!
In Love,

Union Food Survey

Hello people of Messiah,
Like eating food? Like sharing your opinion? Like gift cards? If yes, then keep reading!

We are in a market research class and want to hear your thoughts on the Union Cafe! What should be added? What should be changed? YOU decide. Your participation could make a difference on the meal options you see on the menu for next year!

We know what you’re thinking, “This sounds too good to be true! I get to help my peers complete a class project AND make an impact on the food served at Messiah?!”

BUT WAIT IT GETS BETTER. If you complete this brief survey at the following link by April 14th, you will be entered to win a $20 Amazon Gift Card!
Click here to take the survey: https://messiah.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_25LtXCJdix9TwX3
