Chapel for Commuters

Greetings, Commuter Students!

5 second version:

  • Commuter students carrying at least 12 credits are required to attend seven (7) chapels per semester.
  • Petitions for exemption to the requirement may be made via Self-Service Banner (under the Student tab) through March 5, 2018. See exemption parameters below.

As a reminder, Messiah College does have a chapel requirement for all full-time undergraduate students. This requirement is not intended to be onerous, but rather an opportunity to intentionally foster Christ-centered community with our brothers and sisters here at Messiah and deeper discipleship between students and educators and Jesus Christ.

In looking ahead to your return to spring classes and activities and the routine of the school year, we in College Ministries want to remind you of the chapel requirement for all full-time commuting students of seven (7) per semester. That is half of what is required of full-time residential students. We hope this will be helpful in relieving some of the scheduling conflicts that commuters face. All students may submit a Chapel Attendance Petition (accepted through March 5, 2018) if their situations fall within the bounds of valid reasons for exemption, which include the following:

  1. Academic internship/field placement/practicum that conflicts with chapel times
  2. Off-campus work equaling 25 or more hours per week (On-campus jobs do not apply. Supervisors are to arrange your schedules to accommodate the chapel requirement.)
  3. Ongoing (2 weeks or more) medical issues/emergencies  *Must include a doctor’s prescription/note, and extent of exemption will be assessed on a case-by-case basis
  4. Parental obligations

We look forward to having you back on campus and for new opportunities to grow and learn together!
