Office of Sustainability Positions

The Office of Sustainability has FOUR new positions available effective Fall Semester 2017. We are looking for a Waste Coordinator, Biodiversity Coordinator, Energy Coordinator, and an Engagement Coordinator. The information and application for these positions are now posted on jobs.messiah.edu.

This is a great opportunity to become more engaged with campus sustainability. If you are not interested, but know of someone who might be, please spread the word. :)

Department of Modern Language

The Department of Modern Languages will soon use a new program for Spanish 101 and 102. This new program, Portales, will replace our current program, Aventuras. Summer 2017 online classes will use Aventuras. All fall 2017 sections of SPAN 101 will begin the new program, but all fall sections of SPAN 102 will continue to use Aventuras (4th edition). Students who still need to take SPAN 102 and have already purchased the Aventuras program are encouraged to take the course this fall. After fall semester ALL sections of SPAN 101 & 102 will use the new program. If you have any questions please contact the Department of Modern Languages.

The Shaughraun


Messiah’s Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to present “The Shaughraun,” opening this Thursday night and running for two weekends in Miller Theater. Tickets for Thursday’s opening night performance are also buy one, get one free!

Set against the secret Fenian Uprising in Ireland in 1866, “The Shaughraun” is the comic masterpiece of Ireland’s undisputed master of melodrama. Desperate forbidden passions! Damsels in distress! Mustached villains! And a charismatic hero! All conspire for a delightful Irish romp!

“The Shaughraun” runs March 30—April 2 and April 6—9. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances are at 8pm and Sunday matinees are at 3pm. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office, by phone at 717-691-6036, online at www.messiah.edu/tickets, or at the door as available.

Franz Joseph Haydn: The Seven Last Words of Christ – April 11

Join us for a special Holy Week performance of Haydn’s “Seven Last Words of Christ” on Tuesday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. Mendelssohn Piano Trio members Peter Sirotin, violin, and Fiona Thompson, cello, will be joined by Leonid Ferents, violin, and Michael Stepniak, viola to perform this prayerful and contemplative but also dramatic setting for string quartet. Interspersed with the performance will be short homilies by community religious leaders. The event is free, but a ticket is required. To reserve your ticket, stop by or call the Ticket Office at ext. 6036. This event is sponsored by the Office of the President and the School of the Arts.

We have 25 new chickens and a lot of eggs to sell. The Office of Sustainability will be selling eggs every Tuesday and Thursday. They sell for $3.50/doz. Stop by the Sustainability Office right next to the Falcon to buy your fresh eggs!

Parking Registration!

Student Parking Registration FAQ’s

Online parking registration begins April 21 and will conclude on May 2.  Registration is available weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM only.  Each student will be assigned a time slot based on both class year and number of credit hours presently enrolled in plus credit hours previously accrued.  The earlier your timeslot in the registration process the larger selection of lots you will have.

Instructions detailing how to register for parking will follow within the next few weeks.  Please note, when registering, if a parking lot becomes full and closes, you may be notified that you have been assigned to another lot.

Who can participate in the online parking registration process?

Students who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors as of the end of Spring 2017 semester, AND have a balance due of less than $100 are eligible to participate in the parking registration process.

How can I check to see if I have a balance due on my student account?

You can check your bill through MCSquare à Self Service Main Menu à Student tab àStudent Account à Account Detail for Term.  If you have a balance due you may make a payment at the Falcon Exchange or on CashNet through MCSquare à Home Tab à eBill(pay your bill online)(Under Student Quicklinks).

What if I am a first-year student with less than 24 credits, but I still need a parking permit?

First-year students who are commuters, live more than 250 miles from campus, are regularly employed during the semester or have a medical need can apply utilizing this registration process.  Appropriate documentation will be required to verify on campus parking eligibility and should be dropped off at the Falcon Exchange during the online enrollment period.

I am going to be an undergraduate commuter student next year.  Do I need a parking permit?

Yes.  You will need to purchase a commuter parking permit during your registration period.

How much is a student parking permit?

Permits purchased during the early registration period which ends on July 31 are $125/year for on campus residents and $50/year for commuters.  Beginning August 1 parking permits are $150/year for on campus residents and $75/year for commuters.

What if I cannot pay my bill before online parking registration begins?

If you have a balance due of $100 or more on your student account and cannot pay the balance in full, you must contact Student Financial Services to discuss your financial obligation and establish eligibility for parking registration at 717-691-6004.

Inclusive Excellence


The Office of Diversity Affairs and the Teaching and Learning Initiative seek your presence on Wednesday, March 29th from 4:15-5:15pm in Parmer Cinema, where Dr. Susanna Caroselli will deliver an Inclusive Excellence Lecture titled “Teaching the Other.

A brief description follows:

The phrase “Teaching the Other” may be interpreted as teaching about the Other, teaching to the Other, or teaching the process of “Othering.” As a contributor to the book Jews in Medieval England: Teaching Representations of the “Other”(Palgrave-Macmillan, forthcoming), Susanna Caroselli undertook all three in her discussion of the persecution of Jews in/by visual imagery and the pedagogy needed to teach such a sensitive subject. Using images from medieval manuscripts, she will present strategies for learning and teaching how a visual imagery of oppression develops.

SAB’s Annual DJ Competition Dance!


We’ve made it to the second half of the semester! To celebrate, we’re throwing our next SAB dance this Friday, 3/24, from 8pm-12am in the Union!

Four sets of DJs will be sharing some of their best mixes in hopes of impressing you! And at the end of the night, you get to help vote for the best DJ(s)! The djs are competing for coveted slots at Spring Fling (which is on April 28th, so mark it on your calendar)!

Dean’s Scholarship For Continuing Students

Applications for Dean’s Scholarships for Continuing Students are now available in the Financial Aid Office in the lower level of Old Main and can be downloaded from the Messiah College Web Page at this address:

Dean’s Scholarships for Continuing Students are awarded to current Messiah College students who have distinguished themselves as outstanding leaders in specific activities while attending Messiah College.

Fifteen $1,500 Dean’s Scholarships for Continuing Students are awarded each academic year.


1. Must be a full-time student at Messiah College.
2. Must have completed at least 30 credit hours of work at Messiah College.
3. Must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better.
4. Need not demonstrate financial need, but financial need will be taken into consideration.
Messiah College students already receiving an academic scholarship (not a need-based grant) equal to or greater than 60% tuition are not eligible to receive Dean’s Scholarships for Continuing Students.

Application deadline is May 15.

Become a Messiah Ambassador!

If you love talking about Messiah, we need you to share your experiences with prospective students! The Admissions Office is currently accepting Ambassador applications for the 2017-2018 academic year.

The Messiah College Ambassador program is a student leadership program allowing current students the opportunity to interact with prospective students and families! This organization is sponsored by the Admissions Office.

Ambassador responsibilities include hosting prospective students overnight in the residence halls, leading campus tours, greeting guests on event days, attending chapel with campus guests, serving on student panels, and the opportunity to represent Messiah on off-campus recruitment trips. Ambassadors are rewarded with Messiah apparel, fun activities and professional development events, as well as an Ambassador years of service gift. Ambassadors will be trained at the start of the new academic year.

To apply, fill out the online application and submit two recommendations (at least one from a Messiah faculty member). Applications are due by Friday, March 24.

The 2017-2018 Student Body President & Student Body Vice President Campaigns begin this week. As we have received one pair of applicants for the positions, there will be an uncontested campaign this year. Accordingly, your next Student Body President and Vice President are as follows:

RISE Retreat

Are you interested in working with Immigrants and Refugees? Do you love empowering and encouraging students? Then help with the Refugee & Immigrant Services for Empowerment (RISE) Retreat!

On Saturday, April 1st, 50 middle school students coming from refugee and immigrant backgrounds through the Lincoln Intermediate Unit will be coming to Messiah College to be exposed to higher education and to be empowered to pursue further education.

In what ways can you help? Help as a translator, be a guide for students throughout the day, answer student’s questions about college life, help as a photographer for the event…There are so many more ways you can help!

Summer and Fall Registration Information

Summer and Fall 2017 registration is fast approaching! Registration information will be available beginning Wednesday, March 22 (MCSquare, Academic Life Tab, Registrar Channel). Please be in contact with your academic advisor to schedule an appointment. Academic advising begins Monday, March 27. You will be receiving a postcard via campus mail with more registration information.

IMPORTANT: The Registration Request worksheet will not be delivered to your campus mail box. This worksheet can be accessed on MCSquare, Academic Life Tab, Registrar Channel. We will be mailing a limited amount of hard copies of the form to the academic departments for your advisors.

New ID Cards

Falcon Exchange is pleased to introduce a newly updated ID card for Messiah College students.  The new ID card features additional NFC technological capabilities not present in the current ID card.  Your present ID card will continue to function as it always has and you may continue to use it until you need a card replacement or you make the choice to change to the new ID card.

The new ID cards operate with Near Field Communication, NFC.  NFC is a form of contactless communication between devices.  This technology allows a user to wave their card near a reader device to send information without needing to touch the device with their card.

You may begin to use the new ID cards to record attendance at chapel as well as to gain entrance to most of the residence halls.  Sollenberger Residence is scheduled to receive the new door reader devices over Spring Break.  Witmer Residence and Naugle Residence are scheduled to receive the new door reader devices over the Summer Break.  Over time, you will notice additional reader devices installed in different capacities on campus for your convenience.


1.       Do I have to change to the new ID card?  No.  The choice is yours.  You may continue to use the card you currently have as long as it is functioning properly.

2.       If I do want to change to the new ID card what should I do?  You should bring your current ID card to the Falcon Exchange and ask to exchange it for a new ID card.

3.       Is there a cost for the new ID card?  The standard ID card replacement fee schedule applies.  The fees are posted in white at the Falcon Exchange window.

4.       Do I have to take a new photo ID if I change to the new card?  No.  If we have your current photo on file you may use that one.

5.       How do I use my new ID card?  You simply wave your new ID card near a reader device.  You can opt to swipe in instead of wave the card if you need to.

6.       Do I have to make the decision to change right now?  No.  As long as you are a currently registered student you can change at any time.

7.       Is it okay if I tap my card on the device?  You can tap your card on the reader device but will most likely find you do not need to actually make contact with the device for your card to be recognized.

8.       Why does my new ID card have a Magnetic Stripe on the back if I have a chip in it?  You will need your mag stripe to swipe your card at locations that do not have a reader device.

9.       Can I punch holes in my new ID card?  No.  The new ID cards have a chip and an antenna in them.  Punching holes in the card will compromise the technological capabilities.

10.   What if I have questions or don’t know if I want to change cards?  Please visit Falcon Exchange or send us an email at falconexchange@messiah.edu.

Student Chaplain Forum

Hello everyone!

The chaplains are in the process of selecting next year’s team and we would love to hear from you concerning the preaching chaplain and student body chaplain positions. Therefore, we will be holding our annual chaplain forum this Sunday, March 5, starting at 7:00 PM in Boyer 131.

At the chaplain forum, the candidates for preaching chaplain and student body chaplain will each share a brief devotional. That’s where you come in! After each candidate shares their devotional, you will have the opportunity to provide feedback in an online survey, which we will take into account when we make our decisions! We look forward to seeing you at the forum!
