Dear Members of the Campus Community,

Over the past few days, we have seen a significant increase in the number of students becoming ill with fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.    While there has been no laboratory confirmation, these symptoms are consistent with Norovirus infection, a highly contagious stomach virus.  According to the Department of Health, this virus is also currently being seen widely in our outlying community.

Norovirus is a virus that can spread quickly from person to person, such as in college dormitories or classroom settings.  People can become infected with the virus by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus, having direct contact with someone who is ill or by eating foods that have been contaminated with the virus.

 Because it is very contagious:

·         It is important that if you become infected that you to wash your hands well and frequently and avoid crowded places.

·         If you experience any of the symptoms described above, you should not attend classes or work (if you work in dining services) for 48 hours.

·          Additionally, if you were scheduled to work at Special Olympics or on another Service Day project and you are currently symptomatic, we ask that you not attend as we do not want to infect our campus guests.

Most people recover from the virus quickly.  Treatment is symptomatic.  There is no medication that will help you to recover any faster.  Drinking plenty of fluids will help to prevent dehydration. The College will continue to monitor the number of students with these symptoms.  The Engle Health Center will remain in close contact with local health resources.  By working together, our campus community can help promote a healthy environment and reinforce behaviors that prevent the spread of infection.  Please feel free to contact us with questions or concerns.

More information on Norovirus is available at http://www.cdc.gov/norovirus/ and on our website at:  http://www.messiah.edu/download/downloads/id/838/Norovirus_Fact_Sheet20160413_16091272.pdf

It’s the last SAB Excursion of the semester!

Back in the fall, we tried to visit Grounds for Sculpture, a sprawling sculpture park just across the river from Philadelphia. A visit from the Pope ended up locking down traffic to the city, and our postponed trip was stopped in its tracks by a hurricane the following weekend.
If this was any other school, the story would stop there.
But this is Messiah College, and it’s going to take more than one of the most influential religious leaders and the strongest Atlantic hurricane of 2015 to stop us! WE ARE NOT GIVING UP!

Come along for a day at Grounds for Sculpture with SAB Excursions, this Saturday, April 23rd, from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Tickets are only $10 for admission to the park and bus transportation. Once there, get lost in world-class sculpture and explore the unique grounds, which include paths, forests, hidden areas, and three great places to buy lunch.
As always, sign up at the SILP desk, upstairs in the Union, between 4:30 PM and 1:30 AM between Monday, April 18 and Friday, April 22nd. $10, cash or check only please! Here are the details you need:
Saturday, April 23rd, 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM
The bus leaves Eisenhower Circle at 10:00 AM, so arrive about 15 minutes early
Bring your own lunch, or bring money for food at one of the three locations
Again, tickets are just $10!
