Continuing the story<\/a> of Ernie Boyer’s participation in a humanitarian relief effort after World War II, here are his next four entries as a “seagoing cowboy”:<\/p>\n

Tuesday, June 11, 1946 \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Got up at about 5:30 and packed.\u00a0 Ate breakfast and went to Pier X.\u00a0 Sam decided to wait for Bruce so that was one less.\u00a0 We were told we would leave on the Wesley Barrett a liberty ship which took cattle to Danzig, Poland.\u00a0 We reported back at 1:00 P.M. at which time we were injected for Tetnus and [examined] for V.D.\u00a0 The Maritime Commissioner signed us on the ship and we then boarded a launch to the Wesley W. Barrett.\u00a0 We started bedding stalls and really had to work hard.\u00a0 Since we had missed ships supper and hadn\u2019t eaten any supper we were really hungry.\u00a0 All we had to eat was salmon and crackers.<\/em><\/p>\n

Wednesday, June 12, 1946 \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

They started loading the cattle on about 12:30 A.M. and finished about noon today.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t feel too good.\u00a0 I think it was the fish and crackers.\u00a0 We watered and hayed the animals.\u00a0 We set sail for Poland about 7:30 P.M. and about 10:30 P.M. the boat began to rock.\u00a0 Went to bed tired but not seasick.<\/em><\/p>\n

Thursday, June 13, 1946 \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Got up at six which was our regular rising hour.\u00a0 I began to feel dizzy and so did most of the fellows.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t do much work.\u00a0 Sent my breakfast and dinner overboard.\u00a0 I was alright laying down but when I tried to walk I would get dizzy again.\u00a0 I was lucky though.\u00a0 By the afternoon I was feeling O.K.\u00a0 It [made] me feel better to laugh at the other fellows.\u00a0 A good joke was when Prof. vomited his teeth overboard this afternoon.<\/em><\/p>\n

Friday, June 14, 1946 \u2013 <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Feeling good today.\u00a0 Some of the fellows are still pretty sick.\u00a0 It rained today which made it rather gloomy.\u00a0 We were assigned regular places to work.\u00a0 My place is hold 2 with Joe Brechbill, Bert Asper and Nevin Smith.\u00a0 We had a fire Emergency Drill today.\u00a0 Saw another ship.<\/em><\/p>\n
