reflection on worship

December 7th, 2006

one of Doug’s favorite thoughts on worship:

“If creation includes all that God has made–physical material entities, as well as plants and animals, and all peoples and cultures–then all day long on a Christian college campus we study the praise and lament that all creation offers. Public worship simply gives explicit expression to this praising and lamenting. It does not generate the ‘vertical’ or ‘God-ward’ orientation of things. It simply helps us to recognize it and articulate it.”

So, does this mean that we can worship God and not know it? Is it possible that our very existence brings glory to God or do we actually have to make a conscious decision to worhsip?

totally awesome that somebody has responded with meaningful questions.

before i take a stab at replying, i’m curious as to whether anyone else has thoughts. in other words, who wants to have the next word?

I guess I’ve always thought that just being alive, being his creation, living this life, is worship. So while we may not intentionally be “worshiping” throughout our day, our mere exisence is a testimony to God’s sovereignty and greatness. That being said, it’s important to take it further and to make a conscious effort to give God our days, our time, our problems, our successes, our everything. Our life is worship, and it’s up to us to make it a sweet sound in his ears or not - but regardless, I think there IS a sound.

I realize that that makes little to no sense. Sorry.
