Saying Goodbye To A Legend …

December 23rd, 2008

As was discussed in my column, it’s tough to know where - or if I’m really the best person - to start. I believe the follow-up comments to this post will do Dave Brandt the most justice. This site is dedicated to thanking and reminiscing over a coaching career unparalleled at any school in the country, or world for that matter.

Personally, Coach Brandt has meant a lot to me in only a year’s time of knowing him. From openly discussing his thoughts on leadership, to welcoming my wife and me to team functions, to giving me credit for knowing something about soccer (when I really don’t), he’s been incredible.

Coach, I wish you and your family the absolute best at Navy. I believe that time is the only thing standing between you and the type of success you created at Messiah. While I’m saddened that you won’t occupy an office just down the hallway from my own, I’m eternally grateful and excited to call you a friend. God bless you.

Alright, Messiah nation. It’s time to let your voices be heard. Simply click on the “comments” link below, and write what you feel (or just read what others have posted). I urge you to use this board for it’s intended purpose - this is a forum to thank Coach Brandt, rehash the best memories and share in the incredible ride that our coach has given us over the last 24 years of his life.

    Dave -

It’s tough to know where to begin - and tough to find words that are appropriate. A simple “thank you” seems so inadequate, yet at the same time, the simplicity of words can be the most effective.

    THANK YOU for your friendship.
    THANK YOU for your dedication.
    THANK YOU for your leadership.
    THANK YOU for your vision.
    THANK YOU for your advice.
    THANK YOU for your encouragement.

The list could go on and on. However, once again, simplicity is often best.

THANK YOU, Dave - I’m humbled to call you a friend and wish you and your family nothing but God’s richest blessings at the Naval Academy.

    All the best -

    Bryan

  2. Scott Frey Says:

    Dave,

I’m so happy for you and the opportunity that awaits you. I can’t wait to see what you do with their program. Your example of coaching/leadership have been major influences in regards to the success of not only the women’s soccer program at Messiah but I think every athletic program at Messiah. You have proven the possibility of the AND. Athletic excellence at the highest level with having to compromise in any area of individual and team development as it relates to Messiah. I’m thankful you are still only a phone call away.

    Scott

  3. Brad McCarty Says:

    Coach,

You’ve given so much to this program–your time, your energy, your thoughts, your insight, and your heart. Layton Shoemaker provided you with a great foundation, but you provided the vision necessary to create an excellent program.

The last eight years have allowed me to be a part of a culture and environment that is different than anything I have ever experienced. You have had a positive impact on numerous players, coaches, parents, and administrators through your thoughts, words, and actions.

I’m looking forward to seeing your influence on the Naval Academy’s Men’s Soccer program….it’ll be great.

    Rock n Roll,
    Shag

  4. Jodi McCarty Says:

My children have affectionately called you Davey-Dave for the last 8 years because you mean a lot to them as a family friend, Daddy’s boss and important coach. I cannot thank you enough for the opportunities you have given us as a family over the years. The team functions, banquets, socials, games and many road trips are just a few of the ways you allowed our family to join your family and the much larger Messiah Mens soccer family. Aunt Diane, Alex & Danny also mean so much to us and we are extremely grateful for the time we have spent together and the memories made. Thank you for your friendship and we look forward to cheering you on through this next adventure.

    Love,
    Jodi…Maddie, Morgan, Ian & Finnley

  5. Kelly Phipps Says:

Sir Christopher Wren was one of the world’s great builders and architects. He was responsible for so many of the great buildings of London. His epitaph reads simply: “If you are looking for a monument, then look around you.” Titles, championships, statistics like no other - but if you are looking for a monument to the career of David Brandt at Messiah College, then look around you. Look at the many many lives of players, students, assistant coaches, and so many others who were molded, influenced, touched, and blessed by Coach Brandt’s time here at Messiah College. And he is still a young guy!! Much love, and best wishes, Davey.

  6. Bryan Brunk Says:

    Dave,

Hard to know what to write, but I know I must write something. You’ve become one of my hero’s in the past five years that I’ve known you. One might think for the way that you’ve coached your team to win national championships, but for me it’s more about your deep spiritual focus, superior intellect, ability to kick Jars of Clay of the soccer field, and oh yeah the national championships too.

Thanks for humbly taking the time to invest in the me, among the other members of the Messiah Athletics staff. Many times you’ve knowingly or unknowingly pushed me, encouraged me and inspired me. I’m going to miss you a lot.

  7. Mike Miller Says:

    Dave,

We have been together for over 20 years. Remember Tuesday date nights before kids? You have been a great friend and great colleague. Just last week in the middle of your interview process you stopped by to make sure I was okay after a tough loss.

I have said this to you and I will publicly state here you are the best coach I have ever been around. I am very happy for you and your family as you embark on this new adventure. You have had a great and positive impact on many people. I am definitely a member of that club.

    GOOD LUCK!

  8. Troy Sauer Says:

    Coach:
First of all, congratulations! I’m thrilled for you and wish you nothing but the best in Annapolis.

Secondly, thanks. The countless lessons I learned from you continue to bless my life and mold me into a better man, husband, brother, son, etc. Of them, a few stick out…
    1. The team is bigger than the self. What’s best for you personally, isn’t always what’s best for the team.
    2. The reason we seek excellence is because in order to honor God, we use the abilities and talents He’s given us to our fullest potential….anything less is a compromise.
    3. Give and go’s only work 11% of the time…turn away.
    4. Leading by serving.
    5. Set a high standard & work hard to attain it.

With the exception of #3, I use all those lessons everyday.

Your legacy at Messiah will not ultimately be measured in trophies, which moth and rust destroy, but in the passion and lives of the players you impacted.

    Best wishes…

  9. Kevin Schneider Says:

    Coach,
Your ability to set the right example for your players will always stand out in my mind. You have been able to prove that success on the playing field still comes through hard work, intense preparation and by doing the right thing all the time. Those lessons, among many others, transfer easily into life outside of sports and that’s the legacy you’ve left with your players from Messiah.
The impact and influence you’ve had on me can only be surpassed by my parents. I can say with confidence that many others players feel the same way.
    Go Messiah!
    Go Navy…beat Army…and everyone else!
    Schneids

  10. Randy Ness Says:

    Dave,

The news yesterday of your resignation reverberated through our office and then around our dinner table at home. In a way that was an example of the impact your coaching and leadership have had on many of us - both in our professional and personal lives.

Your teams’ athletic accomplishments through the years thrilled us, elevated the entire institution in the eye of the public, and inspired us that excellence and character can indeed go hand in hand.

I had the special privilege of dining with three recent former players right after your 2008 team won your 6th national title. They were indeed proud and pleased to be part of such a team legacy. Moreso, I was impressed with the caliber and maturity these young men displayed and how they are serving professionally and otherwise in church and society. Thank you for helping to shape young men.

And finally, you need to know that you impacted fans like me. Just yesterday one of your principles - “Mean no offense, take no offense” went through my mind when I encountered a particular situation. It’s a quote I often think about and have adopted as a guiding life ethic and it came from a speech you delivered at an alumni business breakfast. Thank you for sharing from your own life lessons and principles.

Of course, many of us will be saddened to see you go, but Thank you for the years and dedication you have given to Messiah College. I wish and pray all the best for you, Diane and family as you move to a new adventure and chapter at the Naval Academy.

God’s grace and peace to you,

    Randy Ness

  11. Tera Furman Says:

    Coach,
I cannot thank you enough for welcoming Cory and me with open arms. We feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to know you and your family. If there was one thing we could change about our move to Messiah it would be that we would have come much sooner. In our short time here you have meant so much to Cory, and I thank you for that. He feels better prepared for life’s journey because of the lessons in life and leadership he’s learned from you. There have been many times when you unknowingly said something Cory thought was brilliant and he had to rush back to his office to take notes. He truly believes you are one of the greatest leaders he has ever known and he has so much more to learn from you.
We will continue to pray for you, Diane, Alex and Danny. We are so excited for you guys and we can’t wait to see what God has in store for you. We’ll be praying for you!
    Tera

  12. Steve King Says:

    Coach Brandt,
It is a testament to your leadership (and character!) that you have influenced not only your players and colleagues, but those who have only watched you from afar. I’m sure there are countless persons like myself who would say they knew you too little, but nonetheless have learned much. Thank you for your example, and thank you for your integrity. I wish you the best as you move on to a new challenge and a new opportunity to influence a team, university, and community. I praise God for your efforts and I will eagerly watch how you will continue to a blessing to those around you.

    Steve King

  13. Eric Allen (87) Says:

    Dave,

Congratulations! You are an amazing coach, a fabulous soccer player (back in the day) and a wonderful person. You have created a magnificent legacy for yourself at Messiah, one your family, coach Shoe, us alums and your current players are so proud of. “Thank you” for helping make our soccer program World Class. But most of all….thank you for your words of encouragement to me way back when I transferred in from Barrington, and was struggling to find my place on the team. God has given you so many gifts, and you have blessed so many others in your use of those gifts. I pray God will richly bless you, Diane and the kids as you begin to write this next chapter of your life. Messiah will NEVER forget you.

    EA

  14. Dwight Yoder Says:

Dave and Diane, thanks so much for all you have given over so many years to the Messiah community. Wow, think of all of those good memories, who could have ever imagined it! You both will be missed but we celebrate with you at this great opportunity to meet new people, face different challenges and touch the lives of others. Best of luck with your transition, we will be thinking about you and the family.

    Take care, Dwight

  15. Dave Young Says:

    Dave,

It was truly a joy to play and practice with you. Your attitude towards the game was one vey like my own, which I believe was that we always tried to better ourselves. I could always count on you to stay late or go out daily off season to take shots on me for hours at a time. This attitude of intensity along with humilty has obviously followed you to your coaching skills. When we have talked I believe that we agree that you can witness to others just as easy if not easier by being a winner who plays hard under the rules of the game.
Of the field your light heartiness was much more obvious like when we took Biology together (Ha Ha). May God Bless you and your family on this new adventure.

    Still Your Keeper,
    Dave

  16. Mike Avery Says:

    Dave,
I feel a bit of an intruder here as I am not part of the Messiah family, but I wanted to get a message to you anyway, so forgive me.

Congratulations on your new position. This is obviously very well deserved. I look forward to watching your transformation of the Navy program. We need leaders like you, and teams like yours, at the Division 1 level.

    Mike Avery

  17. -B- Says:

It has been an absolute JOY to see the rise of Messiah Athletics and the “Pursuit of Athletic Excellence” paying these dividends!!! The Messiah Soccer program set a standard not only among Messiah Athletics and DIII Soccer, but all NCAA sports. Your dedication to TEAM, character, focus, and intensity are unmatched. I’ve had the opportunity to be around numerous “Big Time” Division I schools and been asked many times if I could do it over again, if I would choose to go to a DI school. Without hesitation, the answer is ALWAYS NO!!! I feel so blessed to have had not only the quality of coaches that I’ve had, but more importantly, the quality of men I’ve had the opportunity to learn from. You are certainly atop that list. I was so excited to hear of this amazing opportunity for you! There is no doubt in my mind you will find success at the Naval Academy.
I’ll always remember my nightmare of a game at Dickinson…..JMac scores in OT and you came sprinting out and jumped on me and said “it’s ok B, we got it done”!
Regardless if you’re at Messiah or not, I’m not going to stop nagging Jay at Wake about the Messiah / Wake pre-season or spring game :)

    Blessings,

    B

  18. Scott Heintzelman Says:

    Dave,

As an alum, trustee, member of the local community, and hopefully a parent of some Messiah students in the future… you have set a great example and built a program with great character. You clearly are a Level 5 Leader from Good to Great (Jim Collins would be proud). Thanks for representing Messiah so well. I am now a huge Navy Soccer Fan!!!

    Scott

  19. Dan Visser Says:

    Coach,
This blog is unreal and a testament to the impact you’ve had on so many lives. You poured out your life to us and for that, I am so greatful. It’s really impossible for me to put into words what you and the program have meant to me. And I guess that was always intentional as we so often spoke of Messiah men’s soccer having an “unspeakable” impact on our lives. I am a better person for having been a part of it.
Among the things I admire most about you is your consistency. You life, your talks, your coaching — everything — were guided by consistent core principles. I never heard you speek searching for something to say — it was always a consistent outpouring of your inner thoughts and beliefs. I always admired and appreciated that.
And now you have the oppurtunity to influence an entirely new community and that’s awesome. What an incredible oppurtunity for you and your family?! There’s no way Navy can yet appreciate what they’re getting.
Now, we all have the rise of Navy soccer to look foward to!
    Best of luck,
    Viss

  20. Doug Schneider Says:

    Coach:

Congratulations! We are very excited for you and your family.

    Just one question:

    When does Navy play Messiah?

    God Bless,
    Doug

  21. Todd Balsbaugh Says:

    Dave,

“Do the right thing…for the right reason..all of the time”…is just one of my favorite truths that you have shared that transcends from the pitch to life. You and Scott have been the perfect mentor team for me and for that I can never thank you enough. Your consistent insight and council have proved invaluable to the progress of the women’s team. I can’t wait to follow Navy and UFC this Fall and wish you and your family all the best. God Bless.

    Balsy.

  22. Joe Dougherty Says:

    Dave,

During his senior year of high school, Sam Casey told me he was going to Messiah. I suggested he consider all of the options in front of him, but his mind was set. Messiah is where he wanted to be.

    Now I know why.

Sam invited me up his freshmen year to watch your team play. I was impressed from the start. And with each training session, each warm-up, each match, I learned something new about the game. Indeed, it was a paradigm shift for me — I had grown comfortable in the way I taught the game. Then I learned the Messiah way of playing.

While I’ve always considered myself an outsider — I went to, and played for, Bethany! — you always went out of your way to make me feel a part of the special situation you created at Messiah. Whether it was me bringing some of my players to watch a practice, or when I stopped by with my kids after a game, and especially during the camps, you always took time out of our busy schedule to share your thoughts on the game. And on life.

The comments on this blog are a testament to the influence you’ve had on many young men. There is no greater calling in life than to lead people toward a Christ-centered life. The Lord gave you the gift of teaching, through soccer. The Naval Academy is blessed to have you.

Annapolis is about two hours from Haymarket — just like Grantham. I look forward to watching how your system works at the Division I level. While the Commonwealth coaches may be breathing a sigh of relief, the folks at College Park, Georgetown, GW, etc. have no idea what’s about to hit them!

May God continue to bless you and your family, Dave.

    In Christ,
    Joe Doc

  23. Derek Price Says:

    Dave,
Wow, as I have browsed through just a few of these comments and postings, I only wish I would have had the opportunity to know you better. As a student athlete at Messiah and now as a coach, I have watched you and your program over the years, and have been impressed, not only with your titles and trophies, but the quality men that your program produces. I believe that speaks volumes to the coach and man that you are, so thank you for years of service, the Messiah family is forever indebted to you.
I wish you all the best as you embark on this next chapter in your life, I am confident that God will continue to bless you, your family and your team as you continue to put him first in all you do.
    All the best Davey,
    Derek

    GO NAVY!!!!

  24. Deb Visser Says:

    Dave and Diane,

    First of all - CONGRATULATIONS!!

It is with mixed emotions to learn the news that you will be leaving the Messiah men’s soccer program. Our family knows first hand what a tremendous positive impact you have made on the lives of many young men - and what we saw on the soccer field was only a small part of that.

Our prayer for you now is that God will continue to use you greatly at Navy as you have a chance to impact many more young men from many different walks of life that may become great leaders for many.

Messiah College as well as our Messiah will always be with you. Thank you so much.

    Deb Visser (soccer mom)

  25. Heather Greer Says:

    Dave,

I am THRILLED for your next adventure and want to thank you for the time you have taken out of your schedule to meet with me and inspire me. You truly are have given me so much wisdom in such a short period of time and encouraged me to keep “going after it” without compromising anything. If I come across more great stuff written by, or about, U2 I will surly pass it along.

Thank you for the vision and congrats!!

    Heather

  26. Carl Sauer Says:

    Coach,
My wife and I both wish you and your family the very best as you start your new endevor. You will be sorely missed at Messiah. I am so thankful that you gave so generously of yourself to my family. We were lucky enough to send you our three sons. You sent us back three fine young men. I watch them with their families and am so thankful for the lifes lessons you have imparted to them. I will always be grateful to Messiah and to you and your family. God Bless You!
    Carl & Debbie Sauer

  27. Matt Dorsey Says:

    Coach,

I can’t put my appreciation for you into words. You have been the single-most influential person in my life. What you did at Messiah is absolutely amazing. You have the record to prove that, but you also have a group of men who you have prepared for life which also proves your success. I am a better person because of you and your program.

Maybe the most important thing you have taught us is that it is never about the individual. Although you were an enormous part of Messiah soccer, the team will move forward and continue their excellence. You have prepared them well and they know full-well what they need to do. Long live Messiah and the excellence that comes with it. We can say that because you have prepared them well. You were unbelievable. Thank you for what you have done.

I wish you the best as you move on to Navy. As iron sharpens iron…I am excited to see how you sharpen them.

You mean the world to all of us Coach.

    Dorse

  28. Jason McCarty "JMAC" Says:

    Coach/Dave,

I already sent you a lengthy email regarding my thoughts and feelings about this but also wanted to contribute to the public acknowledgment of your impact on our lives. It’s hard to imagine a program that has been solidified by your blood, sweat, and tears. It’s hard to imagine that guys will be walking to the back practice fields and not hear your words. It’s hard to imagine that players for Messiah will no longer be running around Shoemaker field with your voice hovering over all of play. Not only have you given us players a one-of-a-kind technician and tactician but you gave us a role model. A role model of integrity, discipline, vision, heart, passion, organization, boundaries, strength, character, and love. There is no way that I’ll ever in my life forget you or the impact you had on my life as a young man who had no idea how to navigate his life. Through soccer and a very serious program, you gave me something to believe in that was bigger than me and you gave me a place where I could build meaningful relationships around a meaningful goal - to be outstanding soccer players within an outstanding team. I can also see the necessity for something new. A new challenge and new experience. You’ve also earned the “next level.” I wish you all the best and will follow you wherever you go.

    Best Wishes,

    Jason McCarty or JMAC

  29. Mattyc Says:

    Coach,

Even though I have been out of the program for 6+ years, I still find it hard to call you Dave. That is due to the respect and influence you have had on my life. You have been a COACH both on and off the soccer field, providing me with wisdom and positive encouragement on how to live life.

Congratulations on your position with NAVY! I only hope you will have as much of an impact on these new group of boys as we have had on us. I will be praying for you and look forward to the start of the ‘09 season.

    Mattyc

  30. Dave Shirer (MSH) Says:

    Coach-

As a Hooligan, a good friend of many of your players, and from reading what everyone has to say on here I feel like I know so much about you. You push your players to their limits but not with giving them everything they need to succeed. Being freinds with the guys I’ve heard a lot of the Brandt-ism philosophy and core values reguarding teamwork, leadership, and perseverence. The guys live those out and it overflows into those around them. I admire your passion for the game and determination to make your players the best that they can be, making stars out of average boys. Your record at Messiah is incredible and a hard act to follow. You will leave a gap in the Messiah College community that will be hard to fill, but the legacy of Messiah Men’s Soccer will live on. With the passion you have left on your assistants and players the tradition will continue for years to come. You will never be forgotten in Gratham. We fans and friends will greatly miss you and wish you the best of luck at Navy.

    -Dave Shirer
    Messiah Soccer Hooligans

  31. Dave McCarty Says:

    Thank you, Dave,

for the impact that you and your life and your coaching, have had on our two sons, Brad and Jason. Your friendship, leadership, your believing in them, has been priceless. It’s been fun for us to follow Messiah Men’s Soccer under your leadership, in the years since they were players, listening to Todd and Patrick broadcast the games, and occasionally seeing a game in person. We’ll be following you at Navy, and be interested to hear from Brad and Jodi, about the adventures of Diane, Alex and Danny.

    Much love,
    Dave & Jan McCarty

  32. Bobby Mitchell Says:

    Coach,
I wish you the best in the next step that God has for you in His Plan. It is hard for me to put into words the feelings and emotions that I associate with my 4 years at Messiah. I had the benefit of being in your first recruiting class, and we learned together. I am truly thankful for the time and effort you spent molding a young, hot-headed teenager into a man who has learned (and is still learning) roles and responsibilities in God’s Plan. Like many have mentioned, you were integral in teaching me to be involved in something bigger than myself like it teaches about the body in 1 Corinthians 12, everyone has a role they are designed for.

You truly are a man of God, and a great coach, which, over the years, I have come to respect all the more.

I wish you the best in your new phase of life, and pray that you have many opportunities to shine the Light on the pitch and off.

    Thanks.
    Bobby

  33. Laura Nagelhout (HOOT) Says:

    Coach,
I have followed Messiah Soccer for 6+ years now. Starting off as a freshman wondering why everyone went to the soccer games to now hardly ever missing a game. I have gotten to know the guys and through them I see how your coaching and leadership has molded them into great young men. I can’t imagine going up to Shoemaker and not seeing you there but I know these guys have you inside of them; your leadership, passion, love, and it goes on. Messiah will miss you more than your can ever imagine and seeing by the other messages you have influence more than the players, parents and faculty. You have influenced us fans that just simply come to the games! I wish you and your family all of the best. And don’t be a stranger, we look forward to you coming back to Messiah and seeing you as a fan!

    God Bless,
    Laura (HOOT)

I may even come to a NAVY game…When do they play Messiah?! :)

  34. Eric Frey Says:

    Coach,

Thank you for your leadership and your servanthood. Thank you for teaching us to pursue excellence wholeheartedly and to walk humbly. We’ve learned (and I was even able to share with a friend just this past week) that against common belief, these are not things that must be ‘balanced’ or compromised by one another, but may be lived out together fully. Personally, thank you for second chances, for speaking truth into our lives, and for standing with your players. Know that we alumni will continue to stand with you and your family, the current and future players of Messiah, and the future leader of our boys. Oh, and I’ll certainly be down to the Academy in the fall, and let Danny know that if he needs a ride up to some Messiah games that we’ll work something out. Merry Christmas Coach, Diane, Alex, and Danny.

    E Frey

  35. John Dulac Says:

As a fan of Messiah soccer I express my deepest gratitude for all that you have done and as a resident of Mechanicsburg I can’t express how much you and your family will be missed. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors and I hope that you and your family are surrounded in Annapolis with as much love and caring as you have here. Thank you for all that you have done.

  36. Amanda Naeher Says:

    Coach Brandt,
Well I think what people are saying on this blog is certainly a strong statement of how much you have influenced the lives of Messiah athletes and fans. As a part of the women’s program I want to thank you for your inspiration, how you lead the boys and watching them play with passion because of you has made a huge impact on our team. You ask for excellence and heart day in and day out and it comes out through watching you on the side and watching your team on the field. You always take time to stop in the hall or office and say hello and see whats going on, that means so much more than you realize I’m sure. Thank you so much for what you have done for both soccer programs, your record is unmatchable, but more so I will miss listening to you coach at practice and on the sidelines.
You will be missed, best of luck at Navy!!

  37. Kevin Oberholtzer '85 Says:

    Dave,

As a fan, all I can say is thanks for the fun it’s been to watch your teams play. My only problem was always “how I can get to more games?” I attended the Business Alumni breakfast you spoke at a couple years ago and brought along a co-worker of mine that is a soccer enthusiast. Hearing you speak about the program’s philosophy and the reason you have for seeking excellence made me even prouder of Messiah soccer and I was thrilled to have my friend hear first hand the how and why behind something he’s heard me crow about for years. May your God-given talent and character allow you to serve with distinction on this new platform. Be a Joseph and Daniel in that new setting. God bless you and your family in the transition.

  38. Ted Fulton Says:

As a USNA alum, all I can say is WOW!!! I know little of soccer, but am NOW a Navy soccer fan. I can not imagine how difficult it must have been for you to leave Messiah after the success you have achieved and the lives you have touched there. I pray that God will continue to bless you, your family and your service to Him as you teach, guide and mold the ahtletes entrusted to you at USNA. May His peace be with you.

  39. Jon Bassoff Says:

While I am sad to see you leave Grantham, I am excited for you and this next opportunity for you in soccer and leadership development of young men. I want to thank you personally for the impact you have had on my life teaching. As players, we have all learned humility, perseverance and persistence. Some of us learned those lessons during our four years at Messiah and some of us like me figured out those lessons after we left. Thank you for influence on all of us and for us current coaches at the HS or collegiate level, thank you for giving us a model of how to run a program. Best of luck - all of us Messiah fans now consider ourselves fans of Navy too now.

  40. Nikolle Bullock Says:

I’m a huge fan of both Messiah soccer programs. Thank you for making my four years at Messiah (alum ‘07) so memorable! I loved going to soccer games regardless of the temperature. All my friends thought I was crazy to sit in the cold. But witnessing the skill, teamwork, and quality of play that the Messiah Men have because of your coaching, made being a little cold worth it. May God Bless you as you start the next chapter of your life as a Navy soccer coach.

  41. Ryan Barlow Says:

I have a bit of a unique position in the world of Messiah soccer. Though I covered every game for the Swinging Bridge (and a few on the V) in the 04, 5, 6, and 7 seasons, and though I played a major part in the formation of the current student supporters’ group, I have only had the privilege of knowing a scant few of the fine young men whose lives you played such a part in, and have only even spoken to you on a couple of occasions. This experience fully immersed yet wholly removed from your family of Falcons has left me admittedly jealous at times of the family you helped create and the world of sports with purpose that I had to leave behind. Whatever tiny bit of affect I had as a writer and Hooligan is an immense source of satisfaction. I can’t imagine Messiah Soccer could possibly continue the same level of success you have brought it, but you have trained many capable leaders to fill your shoes. Best of luck to you in this new chapter of life. I never really had a favorite D1 team before, guess you can now count me a Navy fan.

  42. Caryn Clarke Says:

I remember literally cheering for you on the sidelines at many MC soccer games-soccer cheerleaders-who came up with that notion?! (And yes, for those newbies at MC there used to be soccer/basketball cheerleaders.) You were always awesome to watch and always led the team in a humble and quiet manner. I’ve checked on MC soccer a few times over the years and had heard of you leading the team to so many national titles. It was always exciting. When our daughter started at MC this past fall, she become an instant soccer fan. We had to “drag” her to the Army-Navy football game because she wanted to go to the Soccer Nationals instead. When she read us the email regarding your change, we were very surprised yet very excited. My husband is an USNA ‘87 grad and we are avid Navy fans. We feel God has brought you to Navy to serve Him and to minister these young men. It will be exciting to see and hear about those developments. We will keep you in our prayers. We welcome you to the Navy family and look forward to seeing you and your family at many Navy sporting events. One of the most important sayings you will now need to learn is Go Navy-Beat Army!
God bless you and your family during this big change in your lives and thanks for serving MC so faithfully these many years.

  43. Kai Says:

    Hey Coach,

Writing this note is like giving your speech at the Banquet: you have to fit so much feeling and so many experiences into so little space. In some ways a simple thank you is not enough, yet at the same time seems to be the only thing that could sum up what you have done for me, my family, my friends. Thank you with everything that is in me for changing my life, for impacting me for eternity.

Your influence on my life is evident in so many ways. I have always respected your soccer mind, but even more I’ve admired you for your dogged pursuit of excellence in all areas of your life, whether it be on the field, with your family, or in your spiritual walk and leadership. As others have said already, I’ve learned countless things from you and I’ve been able to share them with others as I’ve moved on.

I’m so happy you’ve gotten this opportunity. Noone deserves it more than you. I know you’ll do well, and I look forward to following the team. I hope you find this new experience both fun and fulfilling. Be confident in all things.

    God Bless

    Kai

  44. spod Says:

As you’ve touched many lives throughout the years, these two stanzas from “your group” scream with meaning during this time. It will NEVER be “goodbye” as Messiah players will ALWAYS “listen through your ears and with your eyes they will see.”

Excellence is a standard you live daily and that has transformed lives! Now, Go get ‘em again!

  45. Tim Becker Says:

Years ago, you spoke a word to me that I’ll never forget. It was spot on, striking right to my core and helping me navigate myself. You can read a field of play; you can also read a life. Thanks for your leadership and friendship - I like your style, but you don’t have to take my word for it.

  46. Carrie K Says:

    Dave:
Five winters ago you told me “it would never be a mistake for Kai to come to Messiah.” You were so right, and that statement has been true for Kaelie and Keaton, too. Thank you for your impact on their lives and the lives of their friends/teammates. You have reminded my boys that God expects and deserves only their best. They have learned by your example to love their Messiah “brothers” sacrificially.

As you move forward, we will be excited to see God use you at the Naval Academy, recognizing that your departure from Messiah is another example of your obedience to your Savior. He will guide and direct you in Annapolis, just as He has done in Grantham.

    Carrie Kasiguran

  47. Aaron Faro Says:

    Coach,
I join the chorus in saying thanks! The many lessons I have learned in the Messiah Soccer environment and under your leadership daily impact my life. God has honored your faithfulness to honoring Him in the big things and in the details. I will be praying for you and your family as you continue to pursue God’s best in a new place!

  48. Taki Says:

    Coach,
The four years playing soccer at Messiah was a great experience as a soccer player but it had more of an impact to me as a person.

Coming from Ecuador and being so far away from home with no friends or family near by, it was a scary and overwhelming situation. Being part of Messiah soccer family gave me the chance to be part of an amazing group of brothers and your coaching on the soccer field as well as your life lessons gave me the guidance and wisdom that I needed at that point in my life.

Although your departure will be a great loss to Messiah community, I know that you will be leaving with an amazing legacy. You have created a culture of excellence on and off the field that will certainly continue and you taught us to strive for perfection in whatever we do, not by just working hard but working hard in the right way. I still remember you saying that perfection in the game can only be achieved by perfection during training and this can be applied to so many things in life.

Recently, I’ve also been sensing that God may have a new mission in your life and this is an awesome door that has been opened. What an opportunity to be able to influence a group of men in the secular atmosphere just as God has commanded us to do. I wish you the best.

  49. Ben Jordan Says:

    Coach,
First, congratulations on the new opportunity at the Naval Academy. I’m excited to see your impact on this new setting.
As others have stated, I’d like to thank you for everything that you poured into Messiah Soccer. You have impacted my life more than any other person. Your pursuit of and fight for excellence has truly showed me what it means to go after something. My two favorite principles from you are to finish stronger than you started and the genius of the AND. The only problem is that I still hear this when I go for a leisure run.

Best of luck to you and your family in Annapolis,

    Beeje

  50. Jamie Gasiorowski Says:

    Coach Brandt,
Thanks so much for the legacy that you have left at Messiah. The high standard which you have established on the men’s side has no doubt trickled over to the women’s program, of which I am truly grateful. It has been an awesome thing to see the success of the teams, especially in the last 8 years and to know the impact which you have left on the individual players on a personal and spiritual level. Congrats and best of luck at Navy; welcome to Mary Land!

  51. JKells Says:

    Coach Brandt,

Congratulations on your new job and your new challenges.

As I read through these messages left for you, I realized something that I think only people deeply routed in the Messiah family truly know. The greatest testament to your work in your time at Messiah does not lie in the incredible win/loss record that you have, or even in the 6 stars added to the crest since you took over. It lies in the respect and love that your players have for you and for what you have done in their lives. It’s absolutely astounding. The multiplied impact as these guys go out into the world and pass on the leadership and direction that they have received will make the footprint that you left at Messiah absolutely limitless.

    JKells

  52. Mike Danubio Says:

    Dave:

All the best to you, Diane and the kids as you take the next step in your journey. You are first rate, first class and as young as you are you are a throwback to a different generation that cherishes commitment, longevity, hard work and greater good of the team. Those principles will always be mainstays of the MC program and in addition to the 6 championships will be part of the legacy that will be left behind as you depart. Go Falcons and Go Navy!

    NUBES

  53. Dan Matarrese Says:

    Coach,

Thanks for all you have done for Messiah. As an alum, I will continue to be proud of the impact you will have on the individuals you encounter.

All the best to you and your family.

    Dan

  54. JJanet Scott Says:

    Dave,
Being a friend of your’s and Diane from college, it has been really fun seeing you both during Messiah’s Soccer Camp. My son has attended your camp for 6 years. During that time I was so impressed in your leadership both with the campers and the coaches. Seeing how both look up to you says a lot about you as a person. You and Diane will surely be missed by both the college as well as your friends. Best of luck at Navy…what a awesome experience you will have. Janet Scott

  55. Steve Montgomery Says:

    Coach,
Like so many others on this board I can’t call you by your first name, though “Davey in the Navy” has a nice ring to it. I just want you to know that at every level of your program, from the POY’s to the guys like me you made an impact. I will never forget your inspiring words after practice- I learned and retained more from your lessons than from any classroom in my 4 years at Messiah. You truly have made an impact on my life- how I run my business, grow my marriage, and strengthen my faith. You are a true icon and Messiah was so blessed to have you. While so many people will miss you, all of us who know you are thrilled that you get an opportunity at the DI level. I hope your life continues to be a blessing to the young men you coach. You have touched more lives than you will ever know. Thanks for your commitment to excellence and teaching me what hard work and accountability are all about.

    Monty

  56. Roger Myers Says:

    Dave,
It has been a pleasure knowing you and considering you a friend for the last 30 years. You will be missed here in Grantham, but more challenges lie ahead for you as God provides the path forward. It seems fitting that you strive to develop yet another soccer program as you have left nothing else to prove (and nowhere else to go for your successor) here at Messiah. I remember how you started a soccer club at Mechanicsburg highschool which turned into the first scholastic team, and how you carried the team on your shoulders, since much of the rest of us were so new to the sport. I remember your devotion in training for Messiah as you juggled thousands of times in your driveway. You followed that up by leading the Messiah mens team in scoring and assists (and setting records on the preseason timed mile as I remember). You have set the example for high standards in yourself and in those whom you have coached. That attitude and devotion will serve you well at the Naval Acadamy, and it will be one of the things we will miss about you when you are gone. Best wishes to you, Diane, Alex, and Danny. Keep in Touch.

    -Roger

  57. Mitch Says:

Coach… All the best. You have been a wonder example of a Godly father, husband, friend, mentor… and soccer coach. May you be richly blessed and experience the genuine presence of the God who loves you in your new work, home and relationships.
You will be missed, but never forgotten.
    Mitch

  58. Gronk Says:

    Coach Brandt,
I knew nothing about playing soccer before I came and
began to play at Messiah under Coach Shoemaker, you
and Scott Frey. You helped plant a desire to study this
game of soccer which helped me greatly in my own
coaching experience. More than that though, it was
clear to me by the time I left that you had a desire and
purpose to not only be the best person (on or off the field)
that you could be, but also to summon that from the
people you have relationships with. I can only surmise
exactly what you have been doing with your players since
you have taken the head coaching job, but whatever
it is, it has surely brought excellence and the highest
quality out on the soccer field. The kind of success that
I see on the soccer field at Messiah begins in the heart
and mind, not in the speed or skill of a player. God will
move out before you in this new opportunity because you
are stepping out for his honor. May your family
experience His peace and blessing as you go!
    By the way, “Dooo….Youuu…Change….Money….Here?”

  59. David Coyle Says:

    Congratulations Dave,

It is a good day for Navy and a bit of sad day for Messiah Soccer. What an amazing legacy you have left in Grantham, on the pitch and more importantly off the pitch. The genuine care you have shown for all the players that have you have coached is truly a gift and I am fortunate to have played for you and count you as a friend.

Best to you and Diane, we look forward to seeing you in Annapolis. Congrats again.

    David and Colleen Coyle

  60. Brooke Good Says:

    Dave,
Over the past 6 years, I have had the privilege of being sandwiched between you and Scott on the back practice fields. I will truly miss listening to and, at times, watching your practices! I greatly appreciate the time you took out of your schedule to invest in me. Thank you for your listening ear and encouragement. I look forward to seeing your “mark” on the NAVY program. Good luck to you and your family as you embark on this fantastic opportunity!
    In Him,
    BROOKE

  61. Ben Stoltzfoos Says:

    Coach,

It’s not easy figuring out how to thank you for the experiences I had at Messiah. But, I guess if I had to sum it all up, I would say that the thing I appreciate most about what you brought to my life and to Messiah is the way you raised the bar in so many areas. Your influence at Messiah served as a constant reminder to everyone watching that the standard for Christians is very, very high. You set new standards in discipline, faith, excellence, relationships, innovation, vision, humility, pride, and the list could go on and on. Those standards will go with me for the rest of my life. Thank you.

You’re in a class of leaders all to yourself. I just started reading “Good to Great.” There’s no doubt you’re a Level-5 leader. Jim Collins would be very proud.

Looking forward to seeing you and the family in Annapolis.

    God bless!

    Foos

  62. Norm Cole Says:

Coach Brandt, Norm Cole, Messiah Class of “92″ here. I wish you all the best at Navy!

As a Messiah Alum, who fell in love with the game thanks to Messiah, all the missionary kids, my roomie Jake Tassy, and the awesome Falcons…we all can not thank you enough for what you have done for our school, all the players you coached, and the ripple effect that has had to all of us connected with Messiah.

You proved that athletes can play at the highest level with passion, pride, respect for each other and respect for the other team. In an age where Sports Center often sounds like the crime log, you lead a different team at a different level playing for the ultimate Master, our Lord.

I will pray for you and those at Navy, that the Lord will use you and impact them as you have us at Messiah. I am well acquainted with difficult choices and moves….but, as you know, the Lord is taking you there for a reason and He will see you through to His goal.

    God Bless You!

    Norm

  63. Bradley Kellett Says:

    Dave,
Although you probably don’t remember me, I have watched you play the years I was at Messiah(1980-1984) and then followed the team since graduation.

Your leadership and example extend further than just your players and coaches at Messiah. My son and his friends attended several of the soccer camps in the summer and your dedication and commitment to excellence was instilled in them also.

On many occassions, I have pointed out to family, friends and associates the Messiah College soccer program and Coach Brandt. What a fine example on how one can follow Christ in whatever Christ calls us to do and how we can use that platform to honor and serve him.

May God continue to bless you as he has called you to continue serving him at the US Naval Academy!

  64. Sebastian Nicewicz Says:

Congratulations on the coaching job! Everyone in the neighborhood knows you’ll find great success at Navy. Your family will be missed. It was great having you as a neighbor!

I would like to wish you and your family all the best and good luck next season!

  65. Scott McKenzie Says:

    Dave,
I sincerely welcomed the opportunity to coach against your teams. I knew that I would always get your best and I had to always give my best. I appreciate your commitment to our great game and the way you represent our profession. I wish you the best of fortunes as you move forward to Navy.

  66. Sam Casey Says:

    Coach,

No one inspired me more and continues to do so through the lessons you taught me. I will share the one that thing that has impacted me the most through your leadership. The true mark of a disciple is that they follow Christ whole-heartedly and take others with them to do the same. Messiah soccer reflects just that and gave all of us a tangible example of what is the highest Calling: to use our gifts and abilities to glorify Him, to serve one another, and to do so alongside the encouragement of faithful brothers. Your spiritual leadership in my life has been so instrumental in helping me find my calling and enabled me to serve others with soccer not just here but worldwide. Thank you for changing my life and most importantly thank you for drawing me closer to Jesus. May the Lord bless you and your family as you take on the new challenge at Navy!
    -Sam

  67. Brandon Fisher Says:

No man I know has ever matched Dave’s degree of intentionality and intensity. Applied to the business world, he could have been a rich entrepreneur. Expressed in politics, he would have been a powerful politician. Lived out in athletics, he was a prolific player and an accomplished coach. No doubt Dave introduced a beautiful style of soccer and raised it to national acclaim and unparalleled success, but his legacy will forever be the character and caliber of men shaped and sharpened within his program. Glorious goals and unforgettable victories came as a result of some learning to play the seven ball or because Dave taught his players to pass a ball with their outside foot. However, the best fruit grew in the environment Dave founded on the spiritual virtues of integrity, discipline, and servant leadership. While striving for excellence in soccer, we were seasoned with the flavor of Christ and left after four years with an aroma honoring our jersey’s namesake for the rest of our lives. Long Live Messiah Soccer! God Bless Dave Brandt!
    ~Fish

  68. Chris Culbert Says:

What can I say that hasn’t already been said. I wanted to thank you
for the great friendship over the years. Soccer was the reason We initially became friends, but getting to know you for who you are made me the better for it, now your off for the next challenge and as you can see you’ll always have a huge Dave Brandt fan base! I have to say if I where a betting man you’ll conquer this one also.

God Bless you and yours —-We wish you the best “GO NAVY”!

  69. Ted Davis Says:

    Dave,

I still can’t believe it, but I’ll have to keep trying.

I love what you did for so many of the young men who came through my classes. You gave them heart, patience, maturity, hope, and strength. And more. It’s a lot harder to teach those things that most other things, and a lot more important, too. THANK YOU for everything you did for them.

What you did for us, the rest of us who could only sit and watch the product on the field a few times a year, is so much less important–but it was fun! THANK YOU for those memories. I know you’ll create some more like them at Annapolis: go get ‘em. I always knew that I liked Navy more than Army, but I was never quite sure just why…

  70. Lori Adams Says:

    Coach Brandt:

My son has attended the soccer summer camp for several years now, as did my brother 20 some odd years ago. What they both had in common is that your soccer camp was the highlight of both of their summers. Although I did always get quite an ear-full about the AWESOME lunches provided in the school cafeteria, the thing they both mostly came away with was respect, and values, not simply the skills that are taught at other sports camps. Your dedication and incredible patience and passion with the kids always astounded me. My father graduated from the Naval Academy and is beyond thrilled at your new post there, but please know how very much you will be missed in Grantham, PA. I do not envy the next poor sap who tries to fill those shoes of yours! Thank you and God bless you and your family in your new endeavors!

  71. Gene Chase Says:

    Dave,

The apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree. The excellence that you modeled was already visible in *my* “coach” (dean, that is to say)– your dad. Our church, I regret to say, is too large for me to have known you well personally. And it was your brother, not you, who was the computer major. But I have been very proud of Messiah College because of your contribution to our collective community. And so no matter how good a job your successor will do, there will never be another Coach Dave Brandt.

Putting goalie Nick Blossey in for that last final great game was a tear-jearking wonderful act of a great coach. Nick’s a computer science major whom I know. Along the same lines as Ted Davis above, I know the dedication and loyalty that your teams have shown because I see them in my classes, and am thankful.

    The end of an era!

    –Gene

  72. Brown Vincent Says:

    Coach,

I know I am late in the game here - but man I am so excited for you. You’ve been a HUGE influence in my life, and can’t thank you enough for all of the great memories of my 4 years at Messiah. I am fired up to see what you will do at the D-1 Level - I hope these NAVY guys realize what they are getting - and if you ever need someone to demonstrate coerver - call me, I am your man.

    Brown
