Out of Athens

Hello friends and family of the Messiah College May Term Greece Trip! We will be updating you on our exciting travels out of Athens to Nafplio.

After leaving early Athens early in the morning today, we made our first stop at Eleusis which is an ancient city of ruins buried in the hills to the west of Athens. We spent time touring around the remains of the once populated area devoted to the worship of the Greek god Demeter. The stories of the town’s birth and destruction were interesting nonetheless.

We then made our way toward the ancient city of Corinth. We explored the city ruins by walking around the remains of Corinth at the base of akrokorinthos, which is the tall mountain behind the ruins. Corinth is unique because of our knowledge about the ancient city from Paul’s accounts in both Acts and Corinthians, which we discussed as we toured the grounds.

Lastly, we climbed up the akrokorinthos, which contained once again the ruins of a castle that had been developed over time by the Francs, the Byzantines, the Romans, and the Ottoman Turks. This landmark was a unique cultural melting pot, as we are able to tour the castle and enjoy the pristine views of the Aegean sea and the surrounding coastline.

Finally, we made our way to Nafplio, which is a small, yet beautiful coastal town also rich in ancient Greek history. Tomorrow, we hope to explore some of the sites of this town as well as make our way to our next stop, Olympia!

Thanks for reading!
