Epidaurua – Mycenae – Olympia

Hi everyone!

After a lot of walking yesterday we spent a good few hours resting and sleeping aboard the tour bus today. Our first stop was at the ruins of the healing center. Compared to many of the ruins we have seen, and despite being mostly leveled, there was evidence of many different buildings and dormitories for sick visitors. Along one side of the site there was a special dormitories for visitors last night at the healing center. Here they were instructed to lay on the floor and hopefully would dream of the gods (specifically Asclepoeios- the god of healing) or of images, such as a snake, that represented them.

Just a few minutes away on the same site, we got to experience the best preserved ancient theater in all of Greece. The theater which is famous for its remarkable acoustics, seating 12,000, was incredible to experience. On the sides of the theater are remains of Roman archways, but the theater itself was built by the Greeks. We walked up the stairs and found that we could hear everyone walking and talking at the bottom stage area very clearly. Some of our group even stepped up and sang for us!

After we visited Mycene to visit the ruins of the palace. We climbed the mountain, went under a well preserved archway (pictured below), looked into tombs of the royal family, walked among the fallen walls, and climbed into an under ground tunnel. Following the ruins of the castle we visited the tomb of King Agamemnon. The large expanse of the tomb included a circular room with a high dome ceiling next to to a cave-like room.

Next, we stopped for a beautiful lunch with piles of pasta, lamb, omelettes, Greek salad, ice cream, and brownies. Following lunch, we took naps on the bus and listened to Dr. Putt and Reverend Mr. Dr. Putt discuss the logic of the cross. We looked at the Greek’s classical views of God (His omnipresence, etc) and how it compared to what we read in scriptures. Paul was vital in sharing ideas of Jesus and who God was to the Greeks.

Tonight we are going shopping and swimming at the hotel.

Thanks for reading!
