Guitarist and violist from Messiah College to perform for Haitian medical missions

November 19th, 2012

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Nov. 19, 2012) —Messiah College professors of music Kerry Harker-Roth and Randall Zwally will perform a department-sponsored recital on Dec. 9 to support medical missions in Haiti.  The recital will take place at 6:30 p.m. at Slate Hill Mennonite Church located at 1352 Slate Hill Road, Camp Hill. Admission is free, but an offering will be accepted to fund Christian health care missions in Haiti via Thriving Villages International. The concert will include Christmas music performed by Harker-Roth on viola and Zwally on guitar as well as Appalachian bluegrass music featuring Zwally on the five-string banjo. The duo will be assisted by Messiah senior guitar major George Waltemire and Messiah alumnus double bassist Caleb Liddick.

About Kerry Harker-Roth
In addition to teaching viola and string methods at Messiah, Harker-Roth currently performs with the York and Lancaster Symphonies and maintains a private studio of viola and violin students. Before relocating to Grantham, Harker-Roth performed with various orchestras in the North Texas area and played principal violist for both the Finger Lakes Symphony and Rochester Women’s Philharmonic in Western New York. She also has 10 years of experience as an award-winning public school orchestra director in both Texas and New York and experience as a conductor at Hochstein Music School in Rochester, N.Y.

Harker-Roth earned her bachelor’s degree in viola performance and music education from Houghton College and her master’s in music education and string pedagogy from the Eastman School of Music.

About Randall Zwally
Guitarist Zwally has taught at Messiah College for over 20 years where he founded and directs the college’s Guitar Ensemble. In addition to teaching at the college’s Grantham campus, he has co-led three cross-cultural courses to Spain to explore the role of the guitar in Spanish history and culture. His guitar-related articles are published regularly in The National Journal of the Music Library Association, “Notes.” Zwally also serves on the Board of Directors of the Susquehanna Folk Music Society and is a certified Suzuki Guitar Instructor.

Zwally holds master’s degrees in guitar performance (West Chester University) and library science (Clarion University) with an emphasis in music librarianship, and he has completed postgraduate music studies at Texas Christian University, Johns Hopkins University, Manhattan School of Music and Ithaca College. He has also completed postgraduate guitar studies with Richard Provost (University of Hartford) and Julian Gray (Peabody Conservatory).
