Messiah College Humanities Symposium explores the past and future of the book

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 30, 2012) — The book is among the most significant and transformative inventions of human civilization; its past and future is the topic of this year’s humanities symposium at Messiah College. The symposium is a six-day exploration of how the book has been transforming our social, cultural, economic, religious and political lives and civilizations for many centuries. Anthony Grafton, president of the American Historical Association, Henry Putnam University Professor of History and chairperson of of the Council of the Humanities at Princeton University is delivering the symposium’s keynote lecture Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. in Brubaker Auditorium in the Eisenhower Campus Center. True North Brass to perform as part of Messiah College Cultural Series season

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 20, 2012) — The internationally acclaimed brass ensemble True North Brass will perform at Messiah College on Feb. 11 as part of the college’s Cultural Series season. The concert will take place at 8 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel on the college’s Grantham campus. Tickets are $23 and can be purchased by contacting the Messiah College ticket office at 717-691-6036 or tickets@messiah.edu.

True North Brass is based out of Canada, but the ensemble’s fresh and unique programming is geared toward a truly international outlook. True North Brass has been welcomed throughout North America and China, where the ensemble accompanied Prime Minister Jean Chretien’s 1998 trade mission and performed recitals in Beijing and Wuhan. Messiah College stages popular musical “Pippin”

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 12, 2012) — The Messiah College department of theatre and dance will present the musical “Pippin” Feb. 2-5 and 9-12 in Miller Auditorium in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on the college’s Grantham campus. “Pippin,” a musical by Stephen Schwartz, is the story of a young man’s search for fulfillment. All shows begin at 8 p.m., except on Feb. 5 and 12 when the performance is at 3 p.m. General admission tickets are $12 and student and senior citizen tickets are $10; tickets can be obtained by contacting the ticket office at 717-691-6036, messiah.edu/tickets or tickets@messiah.edu. *This show contains adult content and themes which may not be suitable for children.  Continue reading…

Therese Zemlin exhibit at Messiah College inspired by scientific illustrations and Japanese manufacturing techniques

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 3, 2012) — The delicate, empyreal constructions of artist Therese Zemlin will be on exhibit at the Aughinbaugh Art Gallery at Messiah College from Jan. 23 until March 9 in a show titled “Iterations and the Chambered Nautilus.” The show appropriates 19th century scientific illustrations of single-celled organisms and the Japanese manufacturing technique for making collapsible gifu lanterns. Intuitively blending materials and process—paper, light, digital prints, papercutting and material manipulation—Zemlin creates something entirely apart: complex forms reflective of the tension of the natural world and manmade world intertwined. The artist will talk about her work on Feb. 10 at 4:15 in the gallery; the exhibit is free and open to the public during normal gallery hours. Continue reading…
