GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 28, 2011) —The Aughinbaugh Art Gallery at Messiah College will host a second reception for Mark Sfirri on Nov. 19 in addition to the Nov. 3 reception. The Gallery is hosting an exhibition from Oct. 24 to Nov. 22 titled “A View from Left Field: The Art and Craft of Mark Sfirri,” featuring impressive sculptures of the well-known Philadelphia turned-wood artist. The additional reception will be held on Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Aughinbaugh Art Gallery, located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on the college’s Grantham campus. GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 28, 2011) — Messiah College will celebrate International Education Week from Nov. 11-18 with a variety of performances, films, lectures and concerts around the theme of “Engaging the Changing World.” For a complete schedule of events, visit www.messiah.edu/IEW/.
The public International Education Week celebration kicks off Nov. 12 with a performance by Hooley School of Irish Dance from 6-6:45 p.m. followed by a showcase of dance forms presented by the Messiah College Dance Ensemble. The event is in Brubaker Auditorium in the Eisenhower Campus Center on the college’s Grantham campus. General admission tickets cost $10 for adults; children ages 16 and under are free. The day will be full of opportunities to learn about and explore the campus, admission policies, financial aid, academic programs and community life. (Oct. 25, 2011) — Marge Samsel will speak on leadership and nursing in her presentation, “Leadership: The I’s Have It: Influence, Inspiration and Insight,” at Messiah College on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. The program is sponsored by Lambda Kappa, the Messiah College chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, and “will focus on the concept that ‘leadership’ is more than a title, but rather many experiential talents to be shared among nursing colleagues.” The presentation will take place in Alexander Auditorium, located in Frey Hall on the college’s Grantham campus. GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 25, 2011) — Messiah College’s theatre department will perform “The Last Night of Ballyhoo,” a comedy written by Alfred Uhry and directed by guest director Jonathan Liebetrau. The show will run Nov. 10-13 and 17-20, with all shows at 8 p.m., except Nov. 13 and 20 with 3 p.m. starting times. The performances will be in Miller Auditorium, located in Climenhaga Fine Arts Center. Tickets cost $6 for students and seniors and $10 for general admission.  GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2011) — Jim Wallis, founder and president of Sojourners magazine, and Arthur Brooks, president of the American Enterprise Institute, will come to Messiah College for an educational debate entitled “Is Capitalism Moral?” on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in Brubaker Auditorium, located in the Eisenhower Campus Center of the college’s Grantham campus. A book signing and dessert reception will follow in Howe Atrium located in Boyer Hall. Admission is free and open to the public, but a ticket is required. The American Enterprise Institute and the Messiah College Honors Program will sponsor the debate, and Peter Greer, president and CEO of HOPE International, will moderate discussion. Greer is a graduate of Messiah College and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Through his work with HOPE International, Greer is widely recognized as an authority on micro-finance development strategies for alleviating physical and spiritual poverty around the world. GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2011) — Messiah College’s Office of Multicultural and International Student Programs will be sponsoring Native American Heritage Month for the duration of November. During this month, the college will provide a forum for people to learn about the unspoken history of Native Americans. To kick off the month, Messiah will be hosting guest speakers Dovie Thomason, world-known storyteller, and Barbara Landis, biographer, from the Carlise Indian School. GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 5, 2011) — Messiah College’s Honors Program will host James Davison Hunter as their 2011-2012 keynote lecture on Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel. Hunter is the Labrosse–Levinson professor of religion, culture and social theory at the University of Virginia. He is an accomplished author and will be speaking on one of his books, “To Change the World: The Irony, Tragedy and Possibility of Christianity in the Late Modern World,” to complement the “To Change the World” lecture series at Messiah this academic year.
