Esteemed performers Quartetto Gelato open Messiah College Cultural Series season

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 25, 2011) — Quartetto Gelato, an ensemble noted for their “exotic blend of musical virtuosity, artistic passion and charismatic anecdotes,” will perform the opening concert of the 2011-2012 Cultural Series season at Messiah College on Sept. 15. The 8 p.m. concert is in Miller Auditorium in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on the college’s Grantham campus. Oakes Museum at Messiah College offers Curator Club program for budding scientists

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 24, 2011) — Children in grades third through fifth are invited to engage in exciting, hands-on learning by enrolling in the Curator Club at Messiah College’s Oakes Museum. From Sept. 10 to Nov. 19, club members will participate in six Saturday sessions, each with its own individual topic for discovery including everything from big cats, to deciduous trees, to simple machines. Sessions are scheduled for Sept. 10, 24, Oct. 8, 22, and Nov. 5 and 19; each session runs from 9:45 a.m. to noon at the Oakes Museum, located in the Jordan Science Center on the college’s Grantham campus. Design of the Decade art exhibit at Messiah College represents outstanding examples of how design contributes to business, society

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 22, 2011) — From Sept. 12 through Oct. 16, the M. Louis Aughinbaugh Gallery in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center at Messiah College will host “Design of the Decade,” an exhibition of commercially produced objects selected by a jury of the Industrial Design Society of America. The exhibit represents outstanding examples of the smarter contribution design is making to business and society.

In coordination with the “Design of the Decade” exhibit, Tom De Blasis, global design director for Nike Football (soccer), will speak on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in Alexander Auditorium, Frey Hall. De Blasis will use his experiences in Haiti to address how to connect and engage with the world as citizens, volunteers and designers. His lecture, “Gamechanging Days,” is free. Continue reading…

Messiah College hosts author James McBride for lecture, jazz

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 22, 2011) — James McBride, author of the New York Times bestseller, “The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother,” will present a free public lecture at Messiah College on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. in Brubaker Auditorium in the Eisenhower Campus Center. McBride’s memoir has been selected for the third time as Messiah College’s common reading text for all first-year students.

McBride, also a renowned jazz artist, will perform with his quintet, interspersing his book discussion with a jazz concert performance. McBride’s presentation will be followed by a book-singing and reception with the author in the college’s Larsen Student Union. Continue reading…

Messiah College participates in White House’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 10, 2011) — On Aug. 3, Messiah College joined representatives from 195 higher education institutions nationwide in Washington D.C. for the launch of the Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge, an initiative of President Barack Obama to mobilize college students of diverse religious backgrounds for community service.

Messiah College students currently interact with community partners from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, but this initiative will challenge Messiah to be more deliberate about preparing students to interact appropriately with individuals of diverse faith traditions as well, says Susan Hasseler, dean of the School of Business, Education and Social Science and overseer of Messiah’s community service and outreach coordination center, the Agape Center for Service and Learning.
