Messiah College Department of Education to host educational research forum

October 20th, 2009

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 20, 2009) — Each year, the department of education at Messiah College presents faculty research findings at an annual educational research forum. This year the forum will be held on Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. in Room 131 of Boyer Hall, located on the college’s Grantham campus. Nancy Patrick, associate professor of special education at Messiah College, will present her research on “Research and Development of the Wireless Enabled Remote Co-presence: Assistive Technology to Improve Employment Outcomes for Secondary Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.”

About the Wireless Enabled Remote Co-presence
“The wireless enabled remote co-presence system” is a type of assistive technology that allows job coaches to provide remote support to individuals in work environments who have autism spectrum disorders, a range of neurological disorders characterized by obsessive, repetitive behaviors and difficulty with social skills. With this system, job coaches can use specialized strategies designed to increase positive behaviors and, ultimately, work-related capabilities of those with autism.

About the Presenter
Patrick is a licensed psychologist, special educator, author and speaker. Patrick has worked with students on the autism spectrum for 20 years and has authored several books. Her latest are “Social Skills for Teenagers and Adults with Asperger Syndrome: A Practical Guide to Day-to Day Life” and “Hints and Tips for Helping Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Useful Strategies for Home, School, and the Community.”
