May concerts at Messiah College showcase vocal and instrumental talent

GRANTHAM, Pa. (April 9, 2009) — The Messiah College School of the Arts will present numerous concerts in May, showcasing a wide array of musical ensembles and styles. All concerts are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the music department at (717) 766-2511, extension 3310.

Concert highlights
• May 1, 8 p.m.
The Messiah College Symphony Orchestra will present a concert in Miller Auditorium, located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center.

• May 2, 2 p.m.
The Messiah College Opera Workshop Ensemble will present two one-act operas, “The Old Maid and the Thief” by Gian Carlo Menotti and “Trial By Jury” by Gilbert and Sullivan, under the direction of Damian Savarino, senior lecturer in music at Messiah, in Miller Auditorium, located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center. This is the fourth offering in the college’s history of students performing opera.

• May 2, 7 p.m.
The Messiah College Handbell Choir will present a concert in Hostetter Chapel.

• May 2, 8 p.m.
The Messiah College Jazz Ensembles will present a concert in Miller Auditorium, located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center.

• May 3, 3 p.m.
The President’s Concert featuring the Messiah College Wind Ensemble, Brass Choir and Symphonic Winds will be held at the Cumberland Valley High School Concert Hall, located at 6746 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg. The concert will also feature the South Brunswick High School Wind Ensemble and the Cumberland Valley High School Symphonic Band. The music department is pleased to announce that Pulitzer Prize winning composer Karel Husa will attend the event.

• May 3, 7:30 p.m.
The Messiah College music department will present Music Nova, a concert featuring student compositions, in Poorman Recital Hall, located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center.

• May 5, 8 p.m.
The Messiah College Brass and Horn Choirs will present a concert in Hostetter Chapel.

The department of music at Messiah College is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The department offers majors in music and music education with concentrations in church music, performance, composition, commercial music and arts management. Through a variety of junior and senior recitals and choral and instrumental ensembles, students gain performing experience both on- and off-campus.
