March concerts at Messiah College usher in spring

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 13, 2009) — The Messiah College School of the Arts will present two concerts in March: the symphony orchestra will perform March 6 at 8 p.m., and the wind ensemble and symphonic winds will perform on March 7 at 8 p.m. Both concerts take place in Miller Auditorium, located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on the college’s Grantham campus, and are free and open to the public. Concert highlights
• March 6, 8 p.m.
The Messiah College Symphony Orchestra will present a concert under the direction of Timothy Dixon, director of orchestral activities at Messiah College, music director of the West Shore Symphony Orchestra and resident conductor of the Harrisburg Opera Association. The program will feature Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 5 in D minor” as well as works by Rimsky-Korsakow and Bartok.
• March 7, 8 p.m.
The Messiah College Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Winds will present a concert under the direction of Bradley Genevro, director of bands. The Messiah College Wind Ensemble is a 48-member ensemble and the Symphonic Winds is a 70-member ensemble comprised of wind players and percussionists. The Wind Ensemble will feature pieces including “Vanity Fair” by Percy Fletcher, “Incantation and Dance” by John Barnes Chance, “When Jesus Wept” by William Schuman and “March with Trumpets” by William Bergsma. The Symphonic Winds will perform “Transylvania Fanfare” by Warren Benson and “First Suite in Eb” by Gustav Holst.
The Messiah College Bands have gained national recognition for their compact disc “Progressions” which made the Grammy Nomination List in 2007. Their latest release, “Sanctuary,” is available through the music department.
