GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 10, 2009) — There is an ongoing discussion about the combination of science and religion, evoking responses that cover all ends of the spectrum. On March 3 the Messiah College Honors Program along with the Central Pennsylvania Forum for Religion and Science look to continue that discussion when they sponsor the lecture, “Scientists Assaulting God: Can Evolution Be a Religion?” Karl Giberson, one of today’s leading science and religion scholars, will discuss how science and religion are intertwined. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel on the college’s Grantham campus.

Giberson is a professor of physics at Eastern Nazarene College and director of the Forum on Faith and Science at Gordon College. He has lectured at many institutions including the Vatican, Oxford University and the Harvard Club of New York. In addition to lecturing, Giberson has authored four book and numerous articles published in “Discover,” “Perspectives on Science and Faith,” and “Zygon.” His most recent book, “Saving Darwin,” was named one of the “Best of 2008” by the “Washington Post.” Giberson is also vice president of the BioLogos Foundation, which promotes programs that focus on the compatibility of evolution and Christianity.

Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls 2,800 undergraduate students in more than 60 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near the state capital of Harrisburg. A satellite campus affiliated with Temple University is located in Philadelphia.
