Follow social reformer and evangelist Amanda Berry Smith through her life’s journey when Messiah College hosts, “God’s Image Carved in Ebony”

January 28th, 2009

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 28, 2009) — On Feb. 18 Messiah College will host the play “God’s Image Carved in Ebony,” sponsored by the college’s Office of Multicultural Programs and Multicultural Council. The show is a one-act play featuring actors Michelle Armster and R. Nick Peterson. There is no admission cost for the play which begins at 7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel on the college’s Grantham campus. A short discussion will follow the performance. This play is appropriate for ages 8 and up.

The play follows African American evangelist and social reformer Amanda Berry Smith through her life’s celebrations and trials. This play is largely based on Smith’s 1893 autobiography. As a former slave, prayer became a way of life for Smith as she relied on it for her own survival along with the survival of others. The play captures Smith’s everyday struggles as she deals with her pride, the death of her five children, and the call to preach.

Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls 2,800 undergraduate students in more than 60 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near the state capital of Harrisburg. A satellite campus affiliated with Temple University is located in Philadelphia.
