Curator Club at Messiah College’s Oakes Museum provides hands-on learning opportunities for children

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Jan. 15, 2009) — Students in third through fifth grades are invited to enroll in the Curator Club, an activity club at the Oakes Museum on Messiah College’s Grantham campus. Members of the Curator Club will attend six Saturday sessions between February 7 and April 18 where they will study everything from birds and plants to volcanoes and earthquakes to the secrets behind Punxsutawney Phil and weather prediction. Each session will be held from 9:45 a.m. to noon at the Oakes Museum. The cost is $50 per child for all six sessions or $10 per activity. About the sessions
Feb. 7: Celebrate Groundhog Day- Learn about Punxsutawney Phil and the science behind weather prediction.
Feb. 21: Abracadabra! - Learn about what makes science so magical.
March 7: Danger! Plants! – Enter the world of carnivorous and deadly plants to see how they help us survive.
March 21: Forces of Nature- Look behind the forces of nature and discover how volcanoes, earthquakes and other natural phenomenon shape the world.
April 4: Rockin’ Robin- Take a look at the birds that live in your own backyard and explore their songs and habitats.
April 18: Gross Me Out! - Ever wonder what makes some things so gross? Learn the science behind nasty, gross and disgusting.

About the Oakes Museum
The museum spans 10,000 square feet in the Jordan Science Center. Within its walls are 40,000 specimens, including Smithsonian-quality African and North American mammals, bird eggs, seashells, minerals, insects and fossils. The Oakes Museum houses the largest bird, egg and African mammal collections in Pennsylvania.
