Messiah College first-year students go and serve “Into the Streets”

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 27, 2009) — More than 700 first-year and transfer students at Messiah College will go “Into the Streets” on Aug. 28 as part of a nationwide program to encourage college students to adapt a lifestyle of community service. This is Messiah College’s eleventh year participating in “Into the Streets,” and this year students will visit 32 local community agencies to serve by building, cleaning, painting, weeding, farming, assembling school kits, assisting and spending time with children and elderly, and distributing food. Messiah College honors program welcomes author Don Opitz

OpitzGRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 26, 2009) — Author and distinguished lecturer Donald Opitz brings his expertise in higher education to Messiah College where he will lecture to first-year honors students and the public on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. Opitz’s book, “The Outrageous Idea of Academic Faithfulness,” is required reading for all incoming students in the college’s honors program. Art exhibit celebrates Messiah College’s centennial year

ORISONSGRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 20, 2009) — On view at Messiah College’s Aughinbaugh Art Gallery, Sept. 11 to Oct. 18, is “Orisons: Enduring Promise,” an art exhibit which is one of a variety of events and activities that mark year-long centennial celebrations at the college, founded in 1909. The title “Orisons,” meaning “prayer” or “songs of praise,” is meant to describe the featured artwork as “offerings,” created by alumni of Messiah’s visual-arts program. The display, on view during normal gallery hours, is free and open to the public. A reception will be held Oct. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gallery. Continue reading…

Best-selling author Tracy Kidder to speak at Messiah College

Tracy KidderGRANTHAM, Pa. (Aug. 24, 2009) — Pulitzer Prize winner and best-selling author Tracy Kidder will speak at Messiah College on Sept. 14. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. in Brubaker Auditorium, located in the Eisenhower Campus Center on the college’s Grantham campus. Kidder will share his experience researching and writing his nonfiction work “Mountains Beyond Mountains,” this year’s common reading for Messiah’s first-year students. Messiah College Cultural Series opens with saxophonist Tim Warfield

(Aug. 20, 2009) — Award-winning jazz saxophonist Tim Warfield, an internationally known recording artist and native of York, Pa., will perform at Messiah College on Sept. 11. Warfield will headline with Terell Stafford on trumpet, Pat Bianchi on organ, and Byron Landham and Daniel Sadownick on percussion to pay homage to the late Shirley Scott, the legendary organist with whom Warfield played on numerous occasions. “One for Shirley” is Warfield’s newest release. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Miller Auditorium located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on the college’s Grantham campus. Messiah College clarinetist to perform “Brahms & Beyond”

(Aug. 21, 2009) — On Sept.4, Messiah College Department of Music faculty member and clarinetist Elisabeth Stimpert, with pianist Jennifer Blyth, will present a program of clarinet repertoire that features a wide range of styles, time periods and nationalities.
