Messiah College celebrates Native American Heritage Month with storyteller Dovie Thomason

October 29th, 2008

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 29, 2008) —In honor of Native American Heritage Month, Native American storytelling will come to life at Messiah College when award-winning storyteller Dovie Thomason presents, “The Spirit Survives” on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. The presentation will take place in Boyer Hall, room 131, on the college’s Grantham campus.

Thomason combines culture, history, autobiography and traditional values in her storytelling to create an atmosphere of truthfulness and respect. In her most recent work she tells about the “American Experiment” with the residential Indian schools in the 19th and 20th centuries. Her stories have captured audiences around the world as she brings light upon an unseen part of American history.

In addition to being an accomplished teacher, lecturer and author, Thomason has traveled the world with her stories as a featured storyteller at many international festivals. She was a featured artist in the opening gala of the American Indian museum in Washington, D.C. and was the first person to speak there. In 2007 she was presented with the Oracle Award from the National Storytelling Network and was named Smithsonian Scholar in storytelling by Smithsonian Associates. Thomason continues to mentor young storytellers in the oral tradition and seeks to provide a message that will resonate with any audience.

Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls 2,800 undergraduate students in more than 60 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near the state capital of Harrisburg. A satellite campus affiliated with Temple University is located in Philadelphia.
