October 9th, 2008

CIVA art exhibit

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Oct. 9, 2008) — Plastic toy eyes, paint, sculpture and video join for a unique display of Judeo-Christian art in the twenty-first century at Messiah College’s Aughinbaugh Art Gallery. On view from Oct. 31 to Nov. 26, the Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA) exhibition, titled “The Next Generation: Contemporary Expressions of Faith,” displays painting, collage, sculpture, film, photography and various forms of media in an attempt to explore the relationship between the visual arts and the Christian faith. All displays are free and open to the public, on view during normal gallery hours. The Aughinbaugh Art Gallery is located on the lower level of Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on the college’s Grantham campus.

About Christians in the Visual Arts
Founded in 1979, CIVA exists to explore and nurture the relationship between the visual arts and the Christian faith. CIVA encourages artists to develop their particular callings professionally, maintaining strong faith convictions. It also provides a safe outlet for sharing work, ideas and ultimately establishes a Christian presence within the secular art world.

While CIVA’s current exhibits focus on varying issues, “The Next Generation” is divided into six sections including, “God in the Details,” “God in the Mystery,” and “Last Things” among others. The artists depict the meaning of each topic in eye-opening ways through the mediums of their professions.

About Aughinbaugh Art Gallery

Louise Aughinbaugh Art Gallery exhibits the work of internationally recognized artists from around the world, as well as faculty and students. Gallery programming supplements campus classroom instruction by bringing practicing artists to campus to demonstrate techniques in classes and by organizing special evening lectures and afternoon gallery talks. The gallery also functions as a hands-on teaching laboratory for students in the college’s course on museum studies. Aughinbaugh Art Gallery is open Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
