GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2008) — Susan Hasseler has been appointed dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences at Messiah College. Hasseler’s term as dean began on August 1.

“Messiah College’s distinct Christian mission, strong academic reputation and positive learning environment drew me to the college,” Hasseler says. “I am delighted to be working with the excellent faculty, staff and students in the School of Education and Social Sciences and the college as a whole.”

Before coming to Messiah College, Hasseler was the associate dean for teacher education and professor of education at Calvin College in Mich. She previously was on the faculty at Michigan State University and taught in elementary and secondary schools in multiple states.

Hasseler’s research interests include anti-racist education, international education (with particular focus on South Africa) and leadership. She earned her bachelors degree in special education from Calvin College; her masters degree in special education from the University of South Dakota; and her doctorate in education and social policy from Northwestern University.

The School of Education and Social Sciences at Messiah College includes four academic departments: education; human development and family science; psychology; and sociology, social work and criminal justice—also, the Early Learning Center and the Harrisburg Institute for Community Research and Collaborative Partnerships. The School offers majors in criminal justice, early childhood education, elementary education, family and consumer sciences education, human development and family science, biopsychology, psychology, social work, and sociology. It also provides 14 instructional certificates and 17 minors. There are approximately 58 full and part-time faculty and staff who serve as mentors, teachers and models for approximately 20% of the student population of the College.

Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls 2,800 undergraduate students in more than 60 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near the state capital of Harrisburg. A satellite campus affiliated with Temple University is located in Philadelphia.
