March 19th, 2008

Triple Play

GRANTHAM, Pa. (March 20, 2008) — The Messiah College Cultural Series will conclude its 2007-2008 season with a performance by Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play, featuring Peter ‘Madcat’ Ruth and Joel Brown, on April 11 at 8 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel on the college’s Grantham campus. The concert will showcase the trio’s ability to create a rare level of joy, virtuosity and American spirit with the folk, blues, jazz, funk and classical music they perform. Concert tickets are $23 and may be reserved by calling the Messiah College ticket office at (717) 691-6036.

Triple Play’s musical roots began nearly 40 years ago when Brubeck; prominent bassist, trombonist and pianist, and Madcat, famous for his unique and riveting talent on the harmonica, began recording music and touring the world together with Brubeck’s father, the celebrated Dave Brubeck. Later, Chris Brubeck partnered with banjo player and folk singer Bill Crofut to create the group Crofut & Brubeck and featuring Brown on guitar. After years of success, Crofut passed away in 1999 and Madcat joined Brubeck and Brown to form the group Triple Play.

Today, the trio performs in concert halls, festivals and clubs sharing their wide repertoire of styles and musical harmonies with audiences around the country. They continue to gain much deserved recognition and in 2006 appeared at the Monterey Jazz Festival and were featured in the premiere of Dave Brubeck’s Cannery Row Suite. Their latest album, “Watching the World” features several new original tunes and is being hailed by “All Music Guide” for its “top-notch musicianship, potent originals, and a touch of humor.”

The Cultural Series is a public, five-part annual performance series sponsored by Messiah College. Triple Play is the final performance of the 2007-2008 season.
