Messiah College welcomes Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen to speak on C. S. Lewis and gender equality

March 5th, 2008

GRANTHAM, Pa. (March 5, 2008) — Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen, professor of psychology and philosophy at Eastern University, will present on C. S. Lewis and gender equality for the fifth annual Riegsecker lecture series. Her talk, “A Preference for People: C. S. Lewis, Dorothy Sayers and the Psychology of Gender,” will be held on March 26 at 7 p.m. in Parmer Cinema, located in the Boyer Hall academic building on the college’s Grantham campus. The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required and may be obtained by calling the Messiah College ticket office at (717) 691-6036.

About Mary Stewart Van Leeuwen
In addition to her position as professor, Van Leeuwen also serves as resident scholar for the Center for Christian Women in Leadership at Eastern University. Her impressive academic record and extensive experience teaching have taken her around the U.S. and abroad; she has taught at Calvin College, Berkeley, and York University in Toronto, Canada, as well as a secondary school in Zambia. Some of her publications include: “Gender and Grace: Love, Work and Parenting in a Changing World” and “After Eden: Facing the Challenge of Gender Reconciliation.”

About the Riegsecker lectures
Sponsored by the Gender Studies Project, the annual Riegsecker lectures are named in honor of Nancy Riegsecker, former trustee at Messiah College. She and her husband, who had a passion for gender issues and leadership, funded the Gender Studies Project in its mission to develop awareness of gender constructs and facilitate change through education and advocacy. As well as sponsoring the lectures, the Gender Studies Project frequently provides other gender-related programming throughout the year.
