Messiah College screening of “Iron Jawed Angels” serves as platform for conversation about voter registration

February 18th, 2008

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Feb. 18, 2008) — On March 2, Messiah College and the Cumberland County Commission on Women will commemorate Women’s History Month by showing the film “Iron Jawed Angels;” facilitating conversations with state and local officials; and providing voter registration resources. The film will show at 1 and 4 p.m. in Parmer Cinema in Boyer Hall, an academic building on the college’s Grantham campus, and officials will address attendees between screenings. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Call the Messiah College ticket office at (717) 691-6036.

The film “Iron Jawed Angels” depicts the struggle and bravery of the National Women’s Party, led by two activists—Alice Paul, played by Hilary Swank, and Lucy Burns, played by Frances O’Connor—as they fight for the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. The film won a Golden Globe in 2005.

In addition to the Cumberland County Commission on Women, this event is being sponsored by the department of politics and the Gender Studies Project at Messiah College.

Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts and sciences, enrolls 2,800 undergraduate students in 55 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near the state capital of Harrisburg. A satellite campus affiliated with Temple University is located in Philadelphia.
