October concerts at Messiah College showcase jazz, wind and orchestra ensembles

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2008) — The Messiah College School of the Arts will present three concerts in October: the jazz ensembles and jazz combo will perform Oct. 18 at 8 p.m.; the wind ensemble and symphonic winds will perform on Oct. 19 at 3 p.m.; and the symphony orchestra will perform on Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. Each concert is in Miller Auditorium, located in the Climenhaga Fine Arts Center on the college’s Grantham campus, and is free and open to the public. Messiah College film series schedule released for late fall

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2008) — The Messiah College Lost Films Society, the on-campus film group sponsored by the college’s Student Activities Board, has announced its contemporary film series for late fall 2008. All films will be shown in Parmer Cinema, Messiah College’s state-of-the-art screening facility, located on the ground floor of Boyer Hall on the college’s Grantham campus. In addition to evening showings, a Saturday matinee is available for each film. Messiah College career panel to explore family science professionals in the world

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 24, 2008) — On Oct.15 professionals from the field of family science will meet with current Messiah College students along with other local groups to discuss the family science profession. The event will be held at 4:30 p.m. in Parmer Cinema located in Boyer Hall on the college’s Grantham campus. There is no admission fee. Sponsored by the Messiah College Department of Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS), this event is being held for its tenth year. Stephen Barr to give lecture on religion and science at Messiah College

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 23, 2008) — Stephen Barr, author of “Modern Physics and Ancient Faith,” will lecture on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in Hostetter Chapel, located on Messiah College’s Grantham campus. Barr will offer insight into a passionately debated topic: the supposed conflict between religion and science. Messiah College hosts conference on responding to family trauma

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 22, 2008) — The 18th Annual Building Strong Families conference, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Council on Family Relations and supporting universities and agencies, will take place on Oct. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Boyer Hall Academic Building located on Messiah College’s Grantham campus. The conference includes a sit-down lunch for attendees; a keynote address by Gary Bowen, distinguished professor at the University of North Carolina; a human services fair; a student poster session; and numerous workshops and presentations by chosen speakers. The conference’s specific focus is responding to families in trauma. This theme will be explored through a series of interactive, applied workshop presentations. Topics will include divorce, loss, financial issues, challenges for military families, natural disasters and several other issues. The cost is $30 for students and $60 for other participants. Messiah College announces October open house

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 22, 2008) — Messiah College will host an open house on Oct.13 to give prospective students and parents an opportunity to visit the Grantham campus and interact with faculty and current students. Prospective students may register online at www.messiah.edu or by calling the admissions office at (800) 233-4220 or (717) 691-6000.

Guests should check-in at the main lobby of the Eisenhower Campus Center. The opening will begin at 9:00 a.m in Brubaker Auditorium of the Eisenhower Campus Center. Campus tours and information sessions highlighting academic programs and financial aid will be offered throughout the day along with a free lunch for all registered attendees.

Messiah College, a private Christian college of the liberal and applied arts sciences, enrolls 2,800 undergraduate students in more than 60 majors. Established in 1909, the primary campus is located in Grantham, Pa., near the state capital of Harrisburg. A satellite campus affiliated with Temple University is located in Philadelphia.

Messiah College dedicates solar energy system in memory of Clifford L. Jones

GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 22, 2008) — A new solar energy system, the latest example of Messiah College’s educational and conservational commitment to sustainable energy, will be dedicated in memory of Clifford L. Jones on Sept. 23 at 2:15 p.m. The open-air Clifford L. Jones Solar Scholars Pavilion, located southeast of Frey Hall academic building, was funded by a grant from the Sustainable Energy Fund (SEF) of Central-Eastern Pa. and contributions from local businesses and contractors. The structure will serve as an educational lab for Messiah College students as well as more than 7,500 elementary school children who visit the on-campus Oakes Museum each year. The solar structure also includes four photovoltaic arrays which will generate three kilowatts of power, enough to offset the utility usage of a computer lab in Frey Hall. Continue reading…

(Sept. 12, 2008) — Singer-songwriter Sara Groves joins forces with Derek Webb, Charlie Peacock, Sandra McCracken, and Brandon Heath to bring the Art*Music*Justice tour to Messiah College on Oct. 4. The concert, benefiting the International Justice Mission and Food for the Hungry, begins at 7 p.m. in Brubaker Auditorium located in the Eisenhower Campus Center on Messiah’s Grantham campus. GRANTHAM, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2008) — Susan Hasseler has been appointed dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences at Messiah College. Hasseler’s term as dean began on August 1.
